Within its recently-renovated confines just in time for the holidays, the locally-owned and operated State-Wayne theatre transports its audiences to exotic lands, forbidden romances, and CGI-animal kingdoms of the 100% digital silver screen. Designed for full comfort, each lumbar-supported seat's power recline feature allows guests to relax in a position of their liking. Not to be outdone, couples can cozy up on loveseat pods during date nights, which contain a flip-up middle armrest and drink holders. When its time to settle in for the feature presentation, crowds can immerse themselves even further into the suspended belief of film. Concessions provide free refills on sodas and large popcorns, fueling imaginations for sprints toward stories' thrilling or heartwarming resolutions.
As a benga beat pulses through the crowd, the Kenya Safari Acrobats defy gravity and the body's limitations as they leap through hoops, tumble from human towers, and limbo under bars. In one of their most famous and startling acts, a single performer stacks, climbs, and then balances on a single-file tower of rickety wooden chairs. Meanwhile, other performers juggle up to six straw hats, bend metal with their hands and teeth, or walk across a bed of nails. As artistic ambassadors of their native Kenya, the acrobats tie educational relevancy to their school performances in stories that highlight the importance of physical fitness, respect for elders and the true meaning of the Swahili phrase "hakuna matata," which The Lion King incorrectly translated as "get rich or die trying."
A small family-run European circus, a Dutch unicycling school, various roofs?these are just a few of the places where Cirque Amongus' staff of performers has been known to hang out. Through hands-on programs, teachers enrich students' sense of teamwork, motor skills, and self-esteem by teaching them circus-arts fundamentals, which they'll use to dazzle friends and families in performances. Voted one of the top places to host a child's birthday party in Michigan by eHow, Cirque Amongus lets kids sample acrobatics at birthday parties, perfect juggling routines at afterschool sessions, and run the mile in clown shoes during school visits. Children can also practice unicycling at drop-in workshops, or test out new magic tricks at open-stage nights.
Under the energetic guidance of accomplished music director and international conductor Volodymyr Shesiuk, the Livonia Symphony fills its season with classical pieces as well as Broadway, jazz, and pop tunes. In "Musical Landscapes," violins lead rich-toned cellos and kettledrums topped with safari hats into strange and distant lands with pieces such as Borodin's In the Steppes of Central Asia, which sonically transcribes the vastness of deserts and low skies. Grofé's Grand Canyon Suite sees its sweeping melodies paired with a picture presentation of the geographical wonder, juxtaposing images of the mature canyon's vistas with photos of it rolling its eyes during its teenage years. A preceding Brahms overture and Bizet's L'Arlesienne Suite no. 2 round out the night of majestic euphony.
After spending time in the classroom, the group heads to various ranges throughout the Detroit area.
Depending on the course, the instructors allow students to try a variety of handguns, including a 1911 Colt Combat Commander .45 ACP.
Above all else, the staff at Michigan CPL Class aims to create a safe, communal, and controlled environment for its students. To do this they rely on experienced instructors, including NRA-certified teachers and range-safety officers as well as former and current members of local law enforcement. With introductory, advanced, and private courses, the pros cater to teens and adults of all experience levels.
Nothing makes a kid feel stronger than putting on a cape and pretending to be a superhero for a few hours. The Super Run gives kids and adults alike the opportunity to find that strength inside themselves without being bitten by a mutated spider. Instead, they do it by organizing superhero-themed 1K and 5K races to raise money for other nonprofits. At these races, runners dress up in their best superhero garb and fly to the finish line where games and entertainment await. Ahead of time, the Super Run picks a site, manages volunteers, and prepares the logistics to put on the events. In the past, they've held races that benefit a variety of groups including the American Association for Cancer Research, Savvy Cyber Kids, and Children's Hospital of Michigan.
