During each class, students learn the basics of the featured sauce—as well as a few of its variations—through the preparation of four dishes, including breakfast items, appetizers, soups, sides, and entrees. Aspiring sauciers will come to understand that these delectable dressings play an important part on the modern plate, as well as the world of spin art.
Angela Henry, director of the Houston School of Floral Design, calls flowers "the physical manifestation of emotions." Within a spacious design studio, students learn to arrange flowery shoots and sprays to communicate these feelings. A cluster of azaleas symbolizes goodwill, while camellias convey affection. The classroom's individual design desks, prep and demonstration areas, and view of a nearby wooded ravine encourage creativity without the threat of tests or grades. Open for education year-round, the school rolls out new classes every month, covering subjects such as introductory floral design and special occasions, from weddings to bee birthdays.
A 2012 Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association's Outstanding Flight School, The Flight School's FAA-certified instructors propel aspiring pilots toward their aviation goals, starting students off on their paths to becoming jet-flying professionals or recreational pilots with complete mastery of the fundamentals. In addition to explaining theory during ground instruction and using an FAA-certified PI-135 flight simulator to safely begin developing the necessary in-flight skills, the instructors take students airborne for hands-on practice. The rental fleet boasts nine aircraft, including a Cessna 172, a Piper Arrow, and a twin-engine flying carpet.
Ceramics by Tess's sunny studio welcomes adults and children to craft one-of-a-kind creations in a fun, supportive environment. Against a lilac wall in the warmly lit entryway, more than 6,000 ceramics await creative types to emblazon their utilitarian canvases in paint-your-own pottery sessions. A rainbow of acrylic paints and shiny glazes transforms the blank objects into original works of art, from a coffee mug emblazoned with World's Best Third Cousin Twice Removed to a piggybank filled with glazed dollar bills.
The studio also proffers hands-on, all-inclusive classes, which guide groups through the shaping of a single item, such as a bird molded from a lump of clay. Children as young as 3 may participate in some classes, and adults take over the shop Thursday evenings from 7 p.m. onward, sipping BYOB drinks and crafting more complex structures, such as life-size replicas of the Great Wall of China.
Referencing his 20 years of experience, skilled shutterbug Richard Maglievaz oversees digital-photography classes for artists of all experience levels. He ensures that whether they teach general classes for beginners or more specialized sessions covering lighting, aperture, or night photography, all instructors are field-tested and capable of being caught on film. Some classes venture out on field trips to such spots as the Houston Zoo, while others stay in the studio for technical lessons.
For 25 years, Texas School of Bartenders has minted professional-grade mix masters in its hands-on classes held in classrooms that simulate real bars. The school's training labs brims with 42 bar stations loaded with up-to-date equipment, including touchscreen registers and serving trays made of hover boards. Full 40-hour courses run throughout the day to accommodate people with designs on pursuing bartending as a career. Covering drink recipes, customer service, and mixing techniques, introductory crash courses throw students into bartending in the same way Spartans taught their children to swim—by throwing them into a shark tank.
