Karate West is one of the largest martial arts schools in the country. Inside the 9,000-square-foot Issaquah training facility or the Mercer Island branch, kids and adults learn classic karate and self-defense moves, while also developing self-respect and discipline for both themselves and one another. Certified instructors lead students through traditional belt programs designed for kids as young as three, as well a specialized programs such as a women's only course, combat hapkido course, and a weapons program where students learn how to properly wield a bo, cane, sword, and loaded seltzer bottle.
Through the use of proper exercise form and technique, students can learn to unleash their hidden potential at Warrior Fitness. The instructors specialize in a variety of workout methodologies. Exercisers build reserves of strength using kettlebells, elevate their heart rates with circuit training, or devastate six-foot heavy bags using a variety of kickboxing strikes and withering insults. Specialized sessions tailor workouts to varying skill and fitness levels, although virtually every class aims to provide a total-body workout that helps tone muscles and increase cardiovascular health.
The skilled instructors at Krav Maga Eastside Training Center lead students through practical, stress-reducing workouts that hone real-life self-defense skills. As the official hand-to-hand combat system of the Israel Defense Forces, krav maga teaches simple principles that correspond to instinctive movements, training participants to protect themselves against chokes, grabs, weapons, or overly aggressive handshakes from mayoral candidates. Three one-hour group classes educate participants in the basic krav maga skills, and a three-hour Rape Prevention or Intro to Krav Maga course prepare students physically and mentally to fight off would-be assailants. The five-week krav maga self-defense course gives a small group of enrollees a thorough introduction to defensive combat techniques, and includes hand wraps to support and protect flying fists as they throw punches and compete in bare-knuckle Whac-A-Mole tournaments. Call ahead to schedule your first class.

NorthShore MMA?s 3,000 square feet ensures plenty of matted space for kids and adults alike to punch, kick, and crabwalk their way through classes. Rows of punching bags serve as the opponent during boxing sessions, while giant tires and ropes build muscles during boot-camp workouts. The gym also offers shower facilities for students to freshen up after a vigorous workout.
Owner and black-belt Donna Middendorf of Sumner Taekwondo Academy leads a team of instructors who share their expertise in Korean hand-to-hand combat with kids and adults. And while the classes spend time with the more martial aspects of the art, they're really not about fighting. For Donna and the team, Taekwondo promotes peace through learning self-respect and gaining confidence—it's the heart of the discipline. At the same time, the instructors help students hone their punching and kicking skills and they engage with their peers in safe, supervised sparring sessions and fully-padded staring contests.
