The Palm Beach Improv stage has played host to some of the biggest names in stand-up spectacle, hosting prominent jesters Tracy Morgan, Daniel Tosh, and Damon Wayans in the last year alone. A rising stand-up star, Amy Schumer has woven her quilt of yuks on such programs as Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and The Ellen DeGeneres Show, and is fresh from her April 2010 Comedy Central Presents special which, unlike stage adaptations of C-SPAN hearings, premiered to high ratings. As an actress, Schumer has had her face televised on 30 Rock and will soon guest-star opposite Larry David in the upcoming season of Curb Your Enthusiasm. Patrons at Palm Beach Improv must be 21 or older, and a two-drink minimum is enforced in the club.
The Fijian expression “Bula!,” a salute to health and happiness, can be heard reverberating within the earth-toned walls of Kavasutratu as visitors take shots of kava served in coconut shells. Before first tastes, the bartending owners of Kavasutratu edify sippers on the history of the refreshing drink, which derives from a root found in the Pacific and is known for its deeply calming qualities. The lounge’s breezy, beach-theme setting mimics kava’s tranquilizing effects with its bamboo bar, dim lighting, and plentiful decorative greenery to nap under. Peanut Island Sports Bar & Grill pairs its traditional pub menu with an assortment of more than 50 bottled and 10 draft beers. Dining duos or quartets can kick-start their meals by feasting on one other's eye contact or sharing an appetizer such as the pan-seared, Cajun-rubbed ahi tuna, which floats down throats with spicy asian mustard, lemon butter, and broccoli slaw. Garnished in lettuce, tomato, onion and tartar sauce, grilled or blackened dolphin arrives in sandwich or wrap form, ready to appease entree-ready palates. Mandibles can also munch on lightly fried half-pound cheeseburgers, crowned in oozing american or swiss and accompanied by fries, tater tots or broccoli slaw. Peanut Island Grill brandishes beers such as Yuengling and Stella Artois available by the bottle, cup, or pitcher; well drinks; and sodas great for parched throats or bubbly face wash. Patrons redeeming Groupons Monday–Thursday receive a complimentary dessert with their meals.
With a wide range of edibles and drinkables, Backstreet's is open Monday through Saturday until midnight and Sunday until 10 p.m, making it a great place for some post-work unwinding and chatting (click here and here for the full selection of menu items). Plunge into a mouth watering filet mignon ($24.95), or reign in a sea-herd of shrimp scampi gorgonzola over linguini ($14.95). They also serve several specialty hamburgers like the Peter Luger Burger, a chargrilled burger bathed in Peter Luger steak sauce and topped with a Stetson hat of provolone cheese ($7.95), as well as gourmet pizza and sandwiches. Other menu items are specially made for sharing like baked escargot or Jamaica jerk tuna bites (both $8.95), allowing people to mix and match plates to pass between them and great for teaching the edible golden rule of nobody going home without trying everything.
Though the staff at The Brass Tap take beer very seriously, they've nevertheless turned drinking it into a game. Customers get a single point for each of the pub's 300 craft beers that they try. At certain milestones, they'll receive gift cards or a t-shirt with a new title, all the way from rookie to beer guru?and, if they conquer the challenge three times, they can win the coveted Repeat Offender 900 shirt.
Thankfully, the bar makes it easy to sort through its 300 beers. The menu is divided up into different beer types, which go deeper than the basic delineation of ale vs. lager vs. water that's been dyed amber. Guests can peruse listings of bottled barleywines and porters, or have a resident beer aficionado fill their mug with an imported brew on draft. Beer even permeates the food: the chipotle mustard on the house-baked pretzels is made with pale ale, just as the cheese dip is made with Samuel Adams. All of the burgers, sandwiches, and pretzel pizzas also have recommended drink pairings.
As for entertainment, each Brass Tap books a variety of local bands throughout the week. Trivia and happy hours find regular spots on the schedule, and some locations have outdoor patios and cigars for purchase.
