When Blue Front BBQ first opened its doors in 1964, founder Norris Nelson didn't have much experience in the business world?but he did have plenty of practice cooking barbecue with his dad, as well as a dynamite family barbecue sauce recipe. Visitors soon flocked to Blue Front BBQ for the St. Louis-style ribs, slow-smoked chicken, and zesty sauce, which became so popular that Norris opened a bottling company across the street to keep up with demand from customers and thirsty plates of pulled pork. At Blue Front BBQ, old-school country cuisine meets an eclectic blend of contemporary American cooking, with racks of ribs, hot chicken wings, and slabs of cornbread served alongside truffle-oil fries, gorgonzola salads, and tempura-battered fish.
EuphoriCo owner Rico McPherson spent 20 years teaching and training in Seattle, Minneapolis, and New York before opening up his salon in 2000. Since then, it has grown to a team of five experienced stylists. Light streams in through the floor-to-ceiling windows, illuminating the space’s modern decor. Using sustainably sourced products the team performs haircuts, colouring, and straightening treatments that don’t deplete the earth’s supply of hair for future generations.
There's no fire beneath the bright white mantelpiece at Substance Salon—its ornate carvings and noble busts simply cement a chic ambiance. However, clients can still warm up with sips of gourmet coffee as they wait for their appointed stylists. The salon staff carries the sophistications of the reception area to each of their stations, where they handcraft 'dos based on the tastes of clients. Pureology products help them wash and blow-dry strands into eye-catching arrays, such as the voluminous Bombshell or the Bohemian—breezy waves that wrap around a full-size acoustic guitar.
Master barber Manny oversees the hot-towel shaves and soothing scalp massages on the gentlemen's menu. The salon also has an entire department devoted to brides-to-be—Styling the Bride—whose members travel to clients throughout New York and New Jersey. Their hair and cosmetic expertise, which results in dazzling updos and radiant makeovers, has been featured on The Knot.
