The 1/3-mile track at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway plays oblong host to up to 7,500 spectators and a multitude of weekly automobile events, including NASCAR Whelen All-American Series races. Four divisions of local drivers display their vehicular velocity around the semibanked asphalt oval, including the high-speed pro series and the Wildcat division, where drivers race 30 laps while locked in their cars with a mountain lion. After the checkered conclusion, fans are invited onto the track for the Happy Half-Hour to hobnob with the racers and feed handfuls of bolts to their trusty steeds as kids cavort with Speedy, the bright-red rabbit guardian of the track. The speedway grounds are open for camping during race weekends, though visitors must have a self-contained camper and leave their sites as pristine as they were found.
Saco is a multipurpose facility that supports the healthy lifestyles of more than 2,600 members and hosts an impressive schedule of unique and dynamic group workout classes. With 65 classes offered each week, budding sweat hogs can dive into Saco's Centergy class, blending yoga and Pilates, or trade inspirational sweat-themed sonnets with compatriots in spinning, step, or weightlifting sessions. Nostalgic drill sergeants can sport their old uniforms and bedazzled riding crops to one of Saco's boot-camp classes, explore a more expressive side through the Latin dance moves associated with Zumba, or enjoy one of their Living Fit or SilverSneakers sessions for older active adults.
Led by internationally adept artistic director Laurence Miller, Pulse schools fledgling boogie-footers in the fine art of ballroom and Latin light-tripping. Each new student enlists in four lessons, held once per week for four consecutive weeks, and the studio's generous calendar offers up a multitude of class times to accommodate schedules bogged down by work or stints on the competitive canning circuit. Aspiring elegant movers may opt for ballroom lessons, learning the basic steps of the fox trot, swing, and waltz, and saucy shakers can enlist in Latin dance, which introduces freshly hatched hot-to-trotters to the fiery footwork involved in rumba, salsa, and onion-dip dancing.
Saco River Yoga embraces the reflective aspect of the Ashtanga system in their classes, training students to glance inward as they unfurl and stretch their physical forms. The studio's mission—to find peace in both muscles and minds—carries over to its meditation sessions and promotes an inner balance previously attained only while walking across a tightrope over a blazing pit of incense.
Outside of classes, diligent instructors work to build a community among their students through book clubs, drum circles, and gong meditations. Their specialized brand of mind and body training has earned Saco River Yoga kudos from Examiner.com.
Cosmotech School of Cosmetology's licensed instructors supervise a squadron of students as they gain experience performing soothing facials and nail services with products such as Pharmagel. During the approximately 60-minute facial, an instructor performs a consultation before unleashing students to cleanse patrons' skin of any dirt, oil, or wash me notes written in freckles. A round of exfoliation sloughs off dead skin cells, while a mask and layer of moisturizer reveal brighter iterations of skin. Fingers and toes clean up their appearance with a trim and file during the roughly two-hour nail service, which smoothes rough edges and keeps nails from growing up and leaving their nests. For the final flourish, a professional polish decorates appendage tips with a client-selected color.
The instructors of Greener Postures Yoga welcome practitioners of all ability levels, leading through Vinyasa yoga that treats breath as students’ guide through dynamic poses. Greener Postures Yoga has also recently opened a new location in West Falmouth which allows them to offer a new range of classes including kids yoga, prenatal yoga, deep stretch yoga, and restorative yoga. Both expansive studios are heated to 95–100 degrees and retain their humidity, which enhances Vinyasa’s heat-generating flows and encourages detoxification through sweat and increased circulation.
