What started as a beauty shop operating out of Aisha Khalid's home has now, 20 years later, blossomed into 10 full-service, women-only salons. The aestheticians at Aisha's Salon & Spa were some of the first to bring threading to the faces of Houston ladies, whisking away unruly brows, chin fuzz, and emperor-tamarin mustaches with a thin cotton filament. For body depilation, they turn to traditional waxing, and body polishes and facials leave skin rejuvenated and smooth. Stylists trim, straighten, and color tresses, and makeup artists apply finishing touches with traditional or airbrush products.
There is no follicle too wispy or fuzz too peachy to avoid the professional waxen masters at European Wax Center. Before your defoliation, you'll be slathered like so much beef brisket with the Center's calming cleanser and a pre-depilatory oil that fights irritation and redness. A very special, alcohol-free blend of polymers and beeswax is specially designed to uproot hair with nary a pang of pain. Afterward, your newly smooth skin will be pampered with an ingrown-hair-and-breakout-despising solution.
Winkin' Twinkies boasts a bevy of aestheticians prepared to strip strands as gently as possible from the skin of local ladies and gents. Enjoy a Brazilian wax, available for either men (an $85 value) or women (a $75 value). Before the signature treatment, you’ll be given a complimentary dose of beer or wine (for customers 21 years of age or older) to help quell nerves and ease you out of your undergarments. The friendly waxer will then cover your unmentionables with No Scream Cream, a potent potion that numbs the area to minimize pain. The procedure will exterminate unwanted strands from your most sensitive area, leaving you with fast and long-lasting results. Make sure to grow your hairs for about two weeks before your appointment, and call ahead to schedule your service.
What’s your favorite part about your job?
My favorite part about my job is getting to know my clients and working with them to reach their skincare goals. As my clients' skin gets better, I can tell a big change in their confidence level. It is an amazing feeling to know I was able to help them feel that way.
What is the best reaction you’ve ever gotten from a client?
It is hard to say; I have gotten a lot of great reactions after services. One client's doctor asked if she had Botox, and she could happily tell them she never has, but that it was due to her facials with me that her skin looked so great.

As a 15-year-old living in Brazil, Helena was a little too young to become a licensed aesthetician. So, she improvised. She created her own homemade sugar wax, and perfected her hair-removal techniques on trusting friends and family. When Helena later moved to the United States, she obtained her license and opened a day spa to share her beauty expertise.
Today, Helena and her technicians welcome guests to a spacious haven outfitted with 13 treatment rooms and a number of mani-pedi stations. While waxing remains a specialty, the staff administers treatments that go beyond hair removal. They believe in the healing power of heat, as evidenced by their infrared sauna. The spa's Steamy Wonder full-body therapies similarly use steam and warm mud to purge bodies of toxins and heavy metals, which if left untreated can cause one's name to grow umlauts. Helena also champions massage as a way to alleviate aches, and employs CosMedix and Éminence Organics products during nourishing facials. No matter what the service, the spa places an emphasis on eco-friendly products and practices—perhaps in a nod to the business's non-chemical, hand-mixed roots.
At Elizabeth Esthetics and Massage, cosmeceuticals by Rhonda Allison line the shelves, and issues of Vogue and Architectural Digest are splayed across tables. These artifacts point to the fact that owner Elizabeth Sampson applies a scientific yet creative mindset when embarking on skincare treatments and massages.
Before each service, Elizabeth draws up a treatment plan that targets specific needs, from wrinkle reduction to tension relief. Then she delivers results. During the pumpkin refresher facial, she brightens skin by infusing it with antioxidants; during the deep-tissue massage, she works out concentrated tension with her elbows and thumbs. Elizabeth sees to it that every client feels comfortable during treatments. To this end, she offers complimentary beverages and answers frequently asked questions on topics such as how to pick the right massage modality and whether it's OK to drool on the face pillow.
