Named "Best Aquarium Supply - 2010" by Houston Press, Fish Gallery provides a plethora of sea-bound critters as well as the accouterments to create an aboveground abode for them. Its stalwart staff guides pesca-philes in the selection and care of freshwater and saltwater creatures. On the freshwater side, bettas enjoy the solitary life ($3.99 each), and neon tetras turn tanks into techno-dance parties ($3.49 each, $30 for 10). The percula clown fish somersaults in saltwater ($29), swimming circles around the illustrious coral beauty fish ($25). Fish-friends create water-filled wigwams, making their new swimmers feel right at home with plant decorations that can also be used as disguises during underwater chase scenes ($7.99+).

The scene is a familiar one: hotel guests lounge beside the outdoor pool as staff members filter around, offering refreshments or collecting clients for a spa treatment. However, at Pet Paradise, the pool is bone shaped and all the guests are dogs. This luxurious scene is one cat and dog owners can find at this boarding and daycare facility that has been owner Fred Goldsmith's pride and joy for a decade. The animal lover was inspired to start his own pet hotel when he simply couldn’t find a place he was comfortable leaving his bichon frise when he went on vacation.

Fred made Pet Paradise to his exact specifications, and the pet hotel's amenities reflect the loving care he lavishes on his own beloved pup. Dogs and cats can luxuriate in spa-quality grooming treatments or burn off some energy during group playtime. In the evening, pets can settle into plush bedding and feel safe knowing that the dedicated live-in staff resides just a bark away. Nocturnal kitties spend the night exploring their own private six-level cat condos while gentle spa music fills the air to keep them entertained. In case of any emergencies, Pet Paradise keeps veterinarians on-call, and in the event of a snack emergency, each staff member is a certified bacon cook.

With three dogs and two cats of her own, Jennie Credille doesn’t draw much of a line between her work and home life. Though she no longer works at an animal hospital, the certified veterinary technician continues to spend many of her waking hours caring for pets as the owner of Perfect Pet Cuts.

With help from three experienced staffers, Credille bathes, blow-dries, and brushes cats and dogs of all breeds and sizes. Her signature service—the aptly named Perfect Bath—finishes off a sudsy wash with a toenail clipping and a cleansing scrub for the ears. Grooming add-ons such as Furminator shed-control treatments, nail polishes, and dental care further contribute to pets’ health and looks, as do the walks and food they receive during their tenure at the salon. Before sending dogs back to their owners, Credille dresses them up with a posh bow, a stylish bandana, or a snout-mounted monocle.

Wabash Antiques and Feed Store has been providing Houstonians with everything from animal feed and heirloom tomato plants to puppies for over a hundred years. Before owner Betty Lou Heacker moved the shop to its current location on Washington Avenue in the Washington Corridor, it had been an antiques shop and a traditional feed store under previous owners for the better part of a century. Now, it’s known as the place to go for organic gardening supplies, the biggest tomato plant selection in Houston and adorable chicks and ducklings at certain times of the year. Pick up plants, feed, bee supplies, bird supplies, fountain supplies and nearly anything else a garden might need – or just stroll the aisle and imagine the possibilities.

Since 1980, family pets have flocked to Man's Best Friend, where they’re cared for all day and night. After passing a behavior evaluation, doggies can check in for daycare to run and frolic in exercise yards or sit perfectly still to feel the rotation of the Earth. During overnight stays borders sleep in private and climate-controlled kennels and can enjoy grooming sessions such as haircuts and nail trimmings. While pets enjoy their furry companions, their owners can attend training programs to learn how to teach pooches obedience or home-protection skills.
