Playing a round of golf is always unpredictable. Rain can spoil it. Any storm can, really. And in most places, golf courses lay dormant for half a year, their fairways untouched as they await the passing of the season. Fortunately, the courses at Fore Season Indoor Golf never close. That's because they exist in the massive, high-definition screens of seven Full Swing golf simulators and are impervious to weather. Best of all, the simulators let golfers play replicas of 42 world famous courses, including Pebble Beach and Pinehurst No. 2., without having to book airfare or turn their golf bag into a personal jet pack.
Along with the golf simulators, the facility’s driving net and indoor putting green allow for golfers to work on every facet of their golf game or schedule lessons conducted by the center’s two instructors. Fore Season Indoor Golf also shares space with a Pub that serves a menu of hot dogs, burgers, and sandwiches that golfers can eat by spearing them with golf tees.
The intimate Headliners Comedy Club at The Gold Room seats guests at private tables to take in the quips of regularly performing comedians. During two-hour shows, three standups—including one national headliner—take the stage in turn. Onlookers can also enjoy pub-fare offerings from the kitchen, such as saucy chicken wings or classic sliders, to fuel belly laughs and distract mouths so they don't shout out premature punch lines.
The Acorn Acting Academy faculty exercises years of experience performing and teaching at reputable institutions that include off-Broadway theater and New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. The team introduces children to on-stage performance with theater games, and expands the skills of adults through an array of classes. Beginner's acting courses teach students to intrepidly bare their creative souls in front of an audience, whereas Performance Intensive classes strengthen advanced thespians so they can deliver monologues, perform short scenes, and carry scripts carved into lead. Acorn Acting Academy also schedules writing classes that focus on themes such as enhancing writer-actor relations and penning soliloquies.
Acorn Acting Academy is run by Acorn Productions, a performing-arts organization that has been going strong for more than a decade. Its artists supply the people of southern Maine with a lens through which to view their emotions and proclivities for using the word "thee" via annual play festivals and theater series such as Naked Shakespeare.
Westbrook Community Center’s activities mirror the diversity of the people they serve. Adult-enrichment classes bring together crafty and inquisitive minds, teaching participants to knit mittens, take digital photographs, or understand veteran burial benefits. Youth programs center around hands-on exploration and movement. In Rock Star Cooking for Kids, locally renowned chef Josh Gelston teaches elementary-aged pupils how to cook a meal that doesn’t involve yarn and Skittles. Yoga, belly dancing, and swimming round out a long list of sports and fitness classes that serve participants of all ages. The calendar keeps track of the seasonally changing athletic, artistic, and educational opportunities.
