Discipline is better when it comes with a field trip to the beach. Kendall Dynamic Center's summer camps teach children respect, courage, and responsibility through martial arts, while at the same time engaging them through crafts, entertainment, and camaraderie. Rafael Ramos founded the facility, and as a longtime student and instructor of martial arts, he sets the scene for an encouraging space where kids can enjoy themselves both indoors and on fun outings while building character. After learning how to use traditional weapons, break boards, and deal responsibly with bullies in the morning's tae kwon do class, kids channel their creativity through art and kick back for a session of video games or sports, perhaps heading out later to play in the ocean or spar with a water-park fountain. The center also holds after-school programs where kids of all ages can learn martial arts in a safe and guided environment.
Everything changed for Peru on July 28, 1821, when South American leader Jose de San Martin declared independence from Spain. A three-year struggle ensued, but Peru's freedom was solidified in December of 1824, when Venezuelan Marshall Antonio Jose de Sucre defeated a Spanish army at Ayacucho and ended Spain's South American rule.
In Miami, this celebration of Peruvian pride takes the form of the Peruvian Independence Day Festival. This annual event brings together the Peruvian-American community and the city at large for a weekend of music, dance, and art. Visitors groove to the infectious rhythms of merengue, salsa, and cumbia from live bands such as the Javier Mereno, Jr. Latin Band and Nando y su Banda Digital, along with the dance music that naturally emanates from fresh ceviche.
It's not every place that could serve both as your morning coffee and bagel spot as well as a late-night hangout. But Natalie's Cafe Lounge is versatile like that. In the mornings, it's a cozy cafe, serving coffee, tea, and espresso drinks to pair with steak and eggs, bagels, and other breakfast dishes. It's also open at lunch, with casual eats such as hot dogs, burgers, salads, and grilled cheese. By night, though, it morphs more into a cozy lounge, complete with wine and beer, plus DJs spinning music. Natalie's Cafe Lounge also hosts karaoke and open mic nights, and those who stop in for brunch on Saturdays can enjoy complimentary mimosas.
