  • American Flyers Wheeling
Though most kids dream of one day being a pilot, very few ever get a chance behind the cockpit. The team at American Flyers seeks to change that by training students to obtain a pilot’s license or merely try out their skills in an introductory lesson. The flight schools’ numerous locations feature flight-training software, online courses, and pigeon mentors to grant students numerous ways to learn how to fly.

  • Lynfred Winery - Wheeling
With its massive selection of varietals and styles, Lynfred Winery seems determined to make something for almost any wine drinker. The cellar brims with everything from bold, spicy reds to crisp and refreshing whites, as well as fruit wines made from apples, cherries, rhubarb, and pears. The grapes arrive from vineyards throughout California and Washington state, although the rest of the fruit typically comes from a bit closer to home, including growers throughout Michigan and Wisconsin. Despite this variety, the staff's commitment to approachable, fruit-forward flavors characterizes virtually everything that the winery makes. This dedication to easy drinking seems only natural given the winery's origins in a home basement. In 1975, Fred Koehler, along with his wife Lynn, decided to try to re-create the family wines his father and grandfather had made throughout the 1920s. The batches grew larger with each passing vintage, and, in 1979, Fred and Lynn chose to upgrade their homespun hobby into a commercial venture. Within six years, Lynfred Winery's creations began to appear in the national spotlight as they garnered awards and medals from wine competitions across the country. This attention allowed Fred to swell production even more, eventually expanding to a larger location in 1990. Fred and Lynn's legacy continues to inspire the staff as they operate a facility that creates more than 100,000 gallons of wine each year using as many as 80 varietals. These wines appear on restaurant menus, on retail shelves, and inside fish tanks throughout the Chicagoland area.

  • Midwestern Helicopter
Having honed his aviation skills in helicopter cockpits for 45+ years, the head pilot at Midwestern Helicopter leads a team of FAA–certified pilots in performing helicopter tours, charters, and pilot instruction. They steer a fleet of three Robinson R-44s and two R-22s over cityscapes and country vistas with photographers, pollinators, surveyors, or sightseers onboard, continuing a crash- and speeding-ticket-free record begun with the company's inception four years ago. The flight team acquaints new flyers with immediate actual flight experience during introductory flights and helps students to achieve private, commercial, and flight-instructor certification during FAA courses. As authorized merchants of Robinson aircraft, they can also hawk helicopters or perform maintenance on various models inside heated hangars without having to first notify the aircraft's next of kin.

  • Buffalo Grove Theater
As recently as 2009, Buffalo Grove Theater was still a sub-run theater, drawing in audiences with lower-priced films whose opening weekends were a few months past. These days, however, the theater is the best of both worlds, sticking to its lower prices while hosting screenings of just-released Hollywood films. The move cemented its place as a favorite community hangout?CBS Chicago called it "one of the northwest suburbs? best-kept secrets" in a roundup of the Best Indie Movie Theaters in Chicago. The on-screen entertainment isn't limited to movies: at private parties, gamers can play their favorite Xbox titles on one of the Buffalo Grove's big screens. Fun inside the five-auditorium theater continues off-screen with free kids' egg hunts every Easter, which complement the free dropped-piece-of-popcorn hunts that take place year-round.
