After 25 years of working in the medical and fitness industries as an ACE- and NSCA-certified trainer, Tanya Bange understands the importance of setting goals. Alongside group fitness instructor Kathy Dorney, Bange leads women of all ages and fitness levels through a rigorous boot camp designed to help clients formulate fitness goals, stick to them, and, ultimately, achieve them. Together, the duo helps clients meet goals that range from simply developing stamina to passing the arm-wrestling portion of their quarterly performance evaluation at the office. They lead full-body workouts that may involve classic pushups, bleacher sprints, and flipping a tire end over end.
Bange and Dorney also run 30-minute workout sessions for preschoolers, planting the seeds of an active lifestyle early by keeping them active in games that include the cardio-centric I?m a Super Hero! and the yoga-based Hungry Caterpillar.

Certified personal trainer Dawn Robertson acts on a personal passion for women's health by leading ladies through White Plains Adventure Boot Camp's intense training regimen, which stokes metabolisms with weight-training and cardio. Pulling from an arsenal of exercises that aim to burn fat, boost metabolisms, and build muscles, each one-hour class slings a new routine in order to prevent participant boredom and muscular snoring. Sessions aim to stoke metabolism and torch calories by cranking up the class to high intensity, but trainers will scale routines to any fitness level and promise never to push exercisers beyond their limits. Regular boot campers may note such body-bettering benefits as toned muscles, piqued endurance, straightened posture, and chiseled abs that can't be washed off. Classes meet in the south gym at White Plains High School on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 3:45 p.m. to 4:45 p.m., and indoors at Mamaroneck Avenue Elementary School Monday–Friday from 5:15 a.m. to 6:15 a.m.
Over the course of a millennium and a half, the tradition of Shaolin Kung Fu has sojourned from the foot of Shaoshi Mountain to modern-day New York. The mindful martial art?equal parts meditation and physical training?crossed the ocean with Shi Guolin, a 34th-generation master of the art. He left his position as head coach at a Shaolin school in China to come to the States in 1992. Since opening his first school in New York, he founded four more branches in locations ranging from Port Washington to Flushing.
At each of these outposts, students can learn Shaolin kung-fu?a discipline that grew out of buddhism; traditional kung fu, which focuses more on physical stamina and strength; and Qigong, a form of wellness-building similar to yoga, developed in Shaolin monasteries. Even people who have never stepped foot in a dojo or formed an opinion about who would win in a fight between Bruce Lee and Kung Fu Panda can feel at home here. Trainers start at the beginning, and ease students in by practicing basic forms. They slowly introduce more techniques, weapon forms, and meditations into the training, all while transforming neophytes into steel-cut martial artists.
