Mill Pond Arts Allentown's staff of pianists, drummers, guitarists, and singers pull out all the stops when it comes to teaching budding musicians. Their private lessons dole out student-specific tips and exercises, group classes allow kids to learn from their peers, and camps—including Broadway boot camp and Camp Xpress—help people overcome stage fright with games and performances. To help youngsters outside of class, Mill Pond hosts the Theta Music Trainer, an online program designed to sharpen ears and shepherd them toward perfect pitch.

During its fifth season, Schmata Productions will showcase a May performance of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast Jr., with a cast and crew of 4th– through 12th-grade students. Participants in the musical-theater program fully engage in the theatrical process, from audition through performance, and eventually competition. The program also hosts group projects that prepare students for the stage and develop self-assessment skills and personal creativity. The organization relies upon donations to fund student scholarships that cover the costs of production, including technical supplies and scripts.

Marbling daubs of paint, smudging charcoal lines, even springing off a gymnast's mat?the ways students challenge themselves at Renaissance Arts Center are as diverse as the students themselves. Classes are available for students aged three weeks to adult, and focus on visual arts, fitness, music, and literary arts programs. Curricula are designed to be comprehensive, incorporating a broad base of concepts, from fundamentals to techniques for specific mediums.

Teaching far more than movement, the instructors at Art of Dance aim to instill in kids and adults a love for physical activity as well as self-confidence and discipline. And in doing so they bring in experts, including members of the American Ballet Theater or Rockettes, to inspire young minds and show them where hard work might lead. Inside the 8,000-square-foot facility, five studios host classes that train students as young as 2.5 years in the disciplines of tumbling, ballet, jazz, tap, and hip-hop. While they pirouette or pop and lock on sprung floors, parents enjoy WiFi in the quiet waiting room or watch the action through one-way windows. During the summer, kids enroll in camps that range in focus from bolstering the imagination with theater to ballet-intensive dancing.
