Extreme athletes banded together to design Spartan Races' intense courses orchestrated over standardized distances, each strewn with natural and man-made obstacles to test mind-body fitness, resilience, stamina, and strength, designed to leave participants exhausted and exhilarated. In waves of 200, runners collect smudges and stains as they perform box jumps, haul heavy sandbags, and juke feral linebackers. Depending on where in the world they're participating, the course may be as short as 3 miles or, for extremely practiced athletes, as long as a full marathon.

With machines set up in rows to encourage competition, many ordinary gyms cater to men's bodies and psychology, right down to the urinals that were "accidentally" installed in the women's locker room. At Curves, you'll move around a circuit of hydraulic resistance machines that have been designed to work with women's bodies and promote weight loss, protect against osteoporosis, and deal with arthritis. An experienced trainer is always nearby to help manage your machine maneuvering and your muscle making. Instead of fiddling with weight stacks and losing your momentum, the hydraulic machines use your body weight and fitness level to create resistance that matches your abilities, decreasing the risk of soreness or injury. Because traditional lift-and-lower motions create bulky muscles, each machine uses push-and-pull motions to create toned, lean muscles perfect for crushing a grapefruit without looking like you can.

Emerald Dragon Karate's certified instructors, led by eighth-degree black belt Brian Kates, train students in Sa-Gi-Do, a powerful, well-rounded style of karate developed by Kates himself. The style incorporates the kicking, punching, grasping, and grappling of five traditional arts, including Tang Soo Do and Judo. With these techniques at their core, programs for students as young as 3 instill a balanced mix of defensive skills, discipline, and street awareness. Once they've mastered some foundational techniques, students can move onto one of EDK's more advanced classes, such as the weapons program. There, participants learn how to wield a bo staff or sword—skills that come in handy while fending off an opponent or trying to open a birthday gift in memorable fashion.
The instructors at Todd’s Martial Arts believe the practice of martial arts is a vehicle that can transport students to a place of greater self-confidence and self-control. Of course, the facility also recognizes that getting into shape and chopping down trees with roundhouse kicks are probably students’ priorities, too. That’s where Todd Sensinger comes in. As the head instructor at TMA, Todd is a second-degree black belt, and has been teaching and practicing the sport for 15 years. Todd and a team of certified instructors teach students ages six and up. They also maintain a clean, welcoming dojang, or “training facility.”
