In a Better Philly feature, Pierre & Carlo European Salon & Spa defines itself as a stylish haven where beauty thrives and stress melts into obsolescence. Glowing panels cooperate with track lighting to illuminate clients as hair whisperers practice their cutting and styling craft. In private treatment rooms, candles' gentle presence complements the soft touches of aestheticians with encouraging flickers. Clients can feast thirsty eyes on the spa's waterfall wall before strolling to service stations where therapeutic facials flush the flaws from skin, be it dry, acne-ridden, or covered in decoupage. Before and after any of five massages, visitors are welcome to relax their minds and muscles in a chromatherapy soak tub lit by colorful LEDs. Owner Dorina D'Amore has established in her list of services a special Men's Club, exhorting each passing man to bust his way through Pierre & Carlo's doors for an invigorating herbal-infusion wrap or a signature mani-pedi.
Tru Salon’s co-owners, Jennifer Collins and Maria Kett, welcome clients to their full-service salon with a homey atmosphere, complemented by high ceilings, drop lighting, and elegant mirrors. Their staff stocks high-end products from brands such as Schwarzkopf, Redken, and Rusk for hair and OPI and Essie for nails. With these high-end elixirs in hand, stylists skillfully cut straight or curly hair, in addition to performing color touchups or administering entirely new head hues. Special-occasion updos ready clients for nuptials and artificial eyelashes add more flutter to peepers. Keratin treatments straighten strands for up to three months by filling in cracked gaps in the follicles and bolstering every lock's protein content. Potential clients can preview the salon interior and the stylists’ handiwork via their online gallery.
Co-owners Wadiya Adger and Georgina Weston, along with hair-design and color specialist Candace Aloi, pamper clients with personable salon services for all hair and skin types. Leaning on their extensive beautifying experience, the trio deftly delivers highlights and cornrows along with less hirsute pursuits, such as waxing, body scrubs, mani-pedis, and anti-aging facials. Slinging handpicked products by Redken, Pureology, and Aveda, the trio of beautifiers sets to work, revamping styles for everything from a night out on the town to a quiet date watching a film about a night out on the town. Not content to only focus on hair, the professional prettifiers soothe clients with spa treatments, such as a hydrating body wrap or peeper-enhancing eyelash extensions.
In 1964, the Carusos decided to start a spa. They wanted to open it in a century-old Victorian house, but the fixer-upper definitely needed a few renovations first. For a year, the Carusos used their evenings and weekends to fashion a spa atmosphere reminiscent of ancient Roman baths. Amid chandeliers, corinthian columns, and engravings of ancient Olympic potato-sack races, stylists craft haircuts and therapists soothe muscles in private treatment rooms. Though stylists use nationally renowned products from Dermalogica and Redken during treatments, they also use styling tools patented by the Carusos themselves.
David Arnold Hair Salon's staff, helmed by a father-and-son team, tends to tufts within a salon filled with classic leather chairs and a hardwood floor. The Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy treatment, pioneered by expert stylist Peter Coppola, uses a natural, formaldehyde-free keratin solution to penetrate fuzzy follicles and reduce frizz that result from dryness or poking at electrical sockets. The two-to-three hour smoothing session begins with a consultation, during which David Arnold's shaft-savvy staff discuss expected results, tips for upkeep, and any additional questions. The treatment tames locks of all shapes, lengths, and colors, keeping hair in line for three to five months.
At A & P Nail, a seven-person team of skilled beautifiers whisks hands into shape, tidying and decorating nails to their owners' specifications. Steady hands wield airbrush tools and miniature accessories to bedeck nails with tiny art. For long-lasting looks, staff members apply acrylics and gels that ensconce nail beds in smooth, chip-repelling pools of color, while on-staff caterpillars fortify nails by weaving tiny silks. To pair with their nail services, the techs also offer waxing services to keep skin smooth.
