Neither Henry nor Carol Huffman, the founders of Cheese Chalet, had any idea that their future careers would be in gourmet dairy products when they first married. Henry was teaching Spanish at the University of Delaware when their local cheese shop closed down in 1976. Though the two began joking about opening their own shop, jokes soon turned to discussion, discussion turned to planning, planning turned to knock-knock jokes, and within a few months, the pair officially opened their first shop. Today, with Henry and Carol still at the helm, their staff of seven seasoned employees prepares fresh deli-style takeout meals and catering trays as they maintain the store’s stock of bulk and prepackaged cheeses from around the world.
At Gadaleto's Seafood Market, owner and operator Andy Gadaleto knows a quality catch when he sees it. Since 1945, a member of his family has helmed the market, accumulating a wealth of knowledge on swordfish, lobster, clams, and wild salmon, as well as more than 60 years of vendor relations that helps them acquire fresh products. Four generations later, quality seafood is still a passion for the Gadaleto bunch. On top of daily shipments direct from Florida, Alaska, and Maine, Andy or a family member travels to the freight terminal and wholesale fish market in Philadelphia to pick up other fresh seafood, such as scallops, oysters, and crabs, or swap news of the latest tariffs imposed by the merpeople. Beyond buying and selling sustainable seafood, Andy and the staff happily share their favorite recipes with curious customers.
In 2009, Philly Balloon Decor got its start in Puerto Rico under the name Boom Boom Events. In 2013, the outfit moved to Philadelphia to craft inflatable decorations for birthday parties, weddings, and other events. The company's balloon artists tailor their creations to clients' preferences, inflating works that range from centerpieces for tables to masses of balloons that spell out messages.

For more than 10 years, instructors armed with at least a bachelor's degree have combined classic fighting techniques with important character-building lessons centered on concepts such as kindness, confidence, personal safety, and the discipline to face opponents armed with cool trading cards. Adult classes instill the same skills, exploring basic martial arts techniques and granting a full-body workout without requiring any previous experience. Beyond their standard karate lessons, the experts also teach other martial arts—such as the self-defense techniques of krav maga, the slow, energetic movements of tai chi, and the somersaults and takedowns of capoeira—and teach general fitness classes, including Pilates.
After transitioning out of a career in the entertainment and record industries, owner Jan Marc Dorfman jokes that he began looking for a new way to “sell round things with holes in the middle.” He fully embraced this new opportunity when he founded Delancey Street Bagels in November of 1989, originally stocking his shelves with 18 bagel varieties and a coffee machine that could only brew two pots at a time. Since then, he has expanded the selection to feature 22 different bagels—including cinnamon raisin, sourdough, and asiago cheese—as well as a full espresso bar with roasted arabica beans from organic and international producers as far away as Guatemala and Kenya. The staff fills the rest of the menu with hot deli sandwiches and an array of baked goods that can include muffins, cinnamon rolls, and scones alongside seasonal items.
