A love for the outdoors fuels Rebecca Pennington, Bikram Yoga of Santa Rosa?s owner, who spent eight years as a wilderness adventure guide and backpacked 1,700 miles of the Pacific Coast Trail. When her knee gave out from overuse, she was devastated, turning to Bikram yoga in hopes of healing her injury. Eight years later, the pain in her knee is gone, and she has continued playing sports. Inspired by her experience, she?s taken over Bikram Yoga of Santa Rosa with a goal of extending the practice?s healing benefits to others. Her troupe of certified instructors leads students through 90-minute classes, flowing through 26 postures and two breathing exercises, each building on the previous pose to build strength and flexibility. The studio is heated to a balmy 105 degrees, which helps loosen up muscles, flush out bodily toxins, and identify any students concealing snowballs in their backpacks.
At Devi Yoga Center, seasoned instructors draw on backgrounds in dance, psychotherapy, and somatic study to teach ancient poses that are both graceful and meditative. The 1,100-square-foot studio, complete with cathedral ceilings, radiant heat, and natural light, shelters students from the stress and flying monkeys waiting outside. Owner Kashi Ananda specializes in TriYoga, a system based in ancient yoga that features a sequence of kundalini-inspired postures synchronized with breath and focus, meant to boost physical, mental, and spiritual energy. Students can also cultivate strength, flexibility, and inner peace with other styles of yoga, from beginner-friendly aerial routines to relaxing prenatal sessions with a complimentary tea service.
Although nearly four decades of experience has given Yoga Studio Ganesha owner Devorah Blum the ability to demonstrate amazing feats of flexibility, she doesn’t expect that of her students. That’s why she and her team of nearly a dozen instructors lead an array of classes, catering to both beginner and advanced skill levels. Novice students gain breathing and stretching fundamentals, while advanced practitioners can continue their discipline or learn new styles of yoga. Beginners and advanced yogis alike practice multiple types of yoga such as Iyengar, Ashtanga, or mom and baby yoga.
Following the professional guidelines of the Pilates Method Alliance, Tone's staff of certified instructors puts movement-induced flush into the cheeks of men and women by guiding them through the breathing, balance, and centering of the Pilates system. The 55-minute private introduction lets participants get a feel for the studio's equipment and understand how their mechanisms work the body's muscles and improve the mind's ability to endure friends' vacation photos. The instructors will also explain the basic terms so students are able to follow their cues in future classes. Finally, torsos are tested with fundamental Pilates techniques that increase core strength, balance, and flexibility—giving adherents an overwhelming advantage in thumb-war battles.
"Through the experience of watching yoga heal me, I know that it has the capacity to heal the masses," yogi Eddie Modestini of Westside Yoga Studio says. Modestini and his wife, Nicki Doane, believe in the healing power of yoga so firmly that they not only opened their own studio, but also created their own form of yoga—Maya—a beginning modality that focuses on accurate alignment and self-discovery.
The studio's instructors—several of whom have traveled to India to learn yoga, meditation, and how to make a mean curry—teach Maya yoga in addition to five other styles, from gentle Restorative to vigorous Vinyasa. During these classes, heated floors warm up toes, fingers, and overachieving noses as they stretch to the floor or to mats and blocks available from the studio store. A packed schedule offers up to eight classes, including early morning and evening sessions.
