Two young participants of the PAL program pair off with a shelter dog, which they train to become a well-mannered member of an adoptive family. During training, children are empowered with the responsibility of caring for the animals, learning to respect them and better understand their behavior. Children can then teach their peers about the need to prevent animal guardians from practicing cruelty and neglect. WHS requires additional funding to purchase supplies for dog training, as well as transportation and snacks for PAL participants.
Angie Schuldies and Nate Mathis have always loved having pet dogs and cats. Eventually, they extended their care and attention to animals outside their homes by working with rescue groups and fostering dogs. This consistent volunteerism fueled their vision of one day owning a doggy daycare—a dream realized by The Dog Haus. During daytime sessions, pups romp together in an indoor play area supervised by animal-loving caretakers. Besides overseeing the fun, the staff trains furry companions, working to refine their manners and social skills, such as mastering a firm pawshake while maintaining eye contact.
For dogs needing overnight accommodation, the boarding program available at their 410 Atlas Avenue location welcomes them to socialize and exercise during the day and snooze in a private kennel at night. Larger kennels can accommodate family packs. Additional services include petsitting, transportation, and grooming.

Since 1987, Bellaire Farms owners Kris and Kara Martalock have imparted equine-riding experience to pupils of all skill levels amid well-kempt stables filled with american saddlebred horses. During each 45-minute lesson, gentle steeds wordlessly encourage riders and instructors offer tips, tricks, and sugar cubes as students amass rein-handling skills such as balance and coordination. Guests can trot and gallop outdoors on carpets of soft dirt and grass or exercise an indoor horse-whispering voice from within the facility’s heated arena during inclement weather. The conscientious instructors take time to match pupils with an appropriate hoofed partner whether riders are complete novices or American frontiersmen looking to correct a century’s worth of bad habits; guests are also welcome to bring their own horses to ride during lessons.
Founded 22 years ago by owner and trainer Gail Simpson, St. Croix Training Center offers lessons for riders of all abilities in a spacious, heated indoor arena. The experienced trainers are proficient in hunt, saddle seat, and Western pleasure-riding styles. Equestrians age 6 and older will spend 30 minutes atop their horse working on the basics or fine-tuning their trot, and approximately another half hour on the ground, saddling and grooming their new many-hands-high friend or discussing the history of carrots over a bowl of sugar cubes.
