Cofounders Jill Tomich and Peter Lavelle had both been active in the fitness world before they opened Ultimate Bootcamp in 2004. Jill threw her energies into boxing, ballet, yoga, and blogging for a wedding diet-and-fitness website, and Peter, a native Irishman, was a triathlete. In all his pursuits, Peter adhered to the motto "We're not here for a long time—we're here for a good time."
This credo infuses all of the boot-camp programs. Campers from all across the fitness spectrum find accommodation as the workouts meet them close to home. Certified trainers never push too far, but always challenge. An energetic mix of outdoor-resistance and interval training layers patrons in svelte muscle, builds strength, and burns calories to promote weight loss more effectively than a rice cake's PR agent. Far from the stereotypical idea of a boot camp, encouragement and support roll in from instructors who foster cooperation and camaraderie between fellow boot campers.
Dr. Martin E. Cutler’s more than 30 year career is defined by his mastery of new technology. In the ‘70s, he was one of the first area doctors to offer no-stitch cataract lens replacement. Today, he helps patients reduce their dependence on glasses with LASIK and makes reading glasses obsolete with conductive keratoplasty, the first FDA-approved procedure that sharpens one’s up-close vision and makes Moby Dick easier to understand.
Alongside Dr. Cutler’s opthalmology center stands a medical spa staffed by licensed aestheticians. With the aid of the Palomar StarLux system, they harness the power of intense pulse light to oust unwanted fuzz from anywhere on the body. They also pair facials with botanical Nelly de Vuyst products and deep-clean pores with PCA chemical peels, and offer free skin analyses to help patients find the best course of treatment or the best way to flaunt a Jay Leno–shaped birthmark.
Lando and Stacey, coaches of CrossFit Lando, draw on their experiences as a collegiate baseball coach and a competitive gymnast, respectively, to help clients identify, achieve, and surpass their goals. They design new workouts each day based on CrossFit’s principles of varied, functional fitness. Though workouts change daily, they may include a mix of exercises such as Olympic weightlifting, running, rowing, plyometrics, and medicine-ball training.
The YMCA keeps residents healthy and engaged in more than 10,000 neighborhoods across the country, but it traces its American origins to the streets of 19th-century Boston. Here, Thomas Valentine Sullivan carried on the mission started in London by George Williams: providing affordable recreation and residence to young men from cities and country towns alike. Over the last century and change, the organization's mission changed to keep pace with the evolving times; today, the YMCA of Greater Boston welcomes anyone interested in furthering the causes of "youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility."
This modern mission combines the Y's signature programming with new initiatives designed to keep citizens one step ahead of an ever-changing world. Members stay fit and active with everything from organized sports and fitness classes to lifeguard, CPR, and first aid lessons. But the Y's developmental programs go far beyond bodily strength; their enrichment and leadership courses equip youths with the confidence needed to take charge in their everyday lives, and ESL classes help newcomers to English embark on the next step of their linguistic lives.
The instructors at Elite Freestyle Karate believe that power isn't in the punch but in the person behind it. With a philosophy geared toward building character, they foster self-confidence and positive attitudes in each of their safe, fun karate and kickboxing classes. Children aged 3 and older learn valuable lessons in dealing with real-world challenges such as bullies and peer pressure.
After experiencing a very difficult time in her life, mother and entrepreneur Lauri Meizler was in search of a healthy start. She went down many paths to recover, but the results were less than optimal: instead of feeling energized, she found herself lethargic and underweight. It wasn’t until discovering cleansing and Ayurveda, one of the world's oldest medical systems, that life began to change. Soon thereafter, she adapted the teachings of the combination, and has since felt energetic, balanced, and in control of her life once again.
Lauri received certifications as a health coach in raw foods and Ayurveda and pairs the ancient Indian tradition’s holistic-wellness practices with modern nutrition training to help others optimize their health and well-being through eating a predominantly plant-rich diet. Her company, Joos, funnels these nutritious ingredients into bottles to help on-the-go people to build healthy, sustainable eating habits.
In flavors such as green lemonade, citrus refresh, and antioxidant blast, these wholesome potables teem with ingredients such as fresh-pressed, unpasteurized apples, ginger, and bok choy. Each bottle contains 10–14 types of garden-grown goodness, which amount to two times the daily requirement of fruits, veggies, and scarecrow smiles. The juices can fortify meals with vitamins and minerals or serve as the meals themselves during cleanses, which last 5–21 days. Cleanse participants can also drink in the support of a certified health coach/cleanse expert and an encouraging online community.
Husband-and-wife team and Prana Power Yoga cofounders Philippe and Taylor Wells foster an environment in which clients can explore holistic wellness through yoga, intensive workshops, and events. Instructors at each heated studio locations roll out the welcome yoga mats, encouraging students of all interests and skill levels, from mothers-to-be to veteran sun saluters, to build strong bodies and peaceful minds in a judgment-free environment. During athletic Vinyasa-style yoga classes, certified instructors crank up temperatures as high as 99 degrees before taking mat mavens through a sequence of sweaty postures linked with mindful breathing exercises designed to boost lung capacity to Sting-like levels. Meanwhile, visitors in search of a transformative experience can attend one of the studio's workshops or events, which range from juice cleanses to destination yoga retreats in Nayarit, Mexico.
