Each of the nine-inch cakes will be covered in a vanilla buttercream and meticulously decorated to an elegant finish by Starry Nights' professional confectioners, ensuring a beautiful and scrumptious treat to bring to a staff soiree, whimsical wedding shower, or vaudevillian slapstick cake fight. It was 1978. A college dropout and a failed medical-school applicant had just brought together their combined life savings to rent an old gas station. Their plan was to resurrect the empty station and open their own restaurant. Their specialty: ice cream. Former bookkeeper Gertrude Popp founded Poppinjay's Cafe more than 20 years ago, eventually recruiting her son and daughter to help oversee the expanding enterprise. Today, chefs at four locations across Bellevue and Kirkland craft creative breakfast and lunch items, mixing pastries from scratch and toasting fresh sandwiches piled with deli meats alongside ample vegetarian fare and healthy smoothies. They also load catering trays with enough snacks, full meals, and desserts to quell the hunger of dozens of revelers or one visiting mastodon.
Poppinjay's Cafe regularly supports its local community by making frequent donations to charities and organizations and hosting monthly meetings for All Women Empowered, an association dedicated to bettering the lives of women and children across the globe.
Spice Route melds traditional Indian cuisine and modern takes on Subcontinent sustenance to give diners a menu with a myriad of options. Starters include 12 vegetarian options such as paneer tikka, comprised of marinated cheese grilled in a clay oven ($12.95), as well as non-veggies such as the tandoori chicken, cooked in the traditional Indian oven and browned over a volcano out back ($11.95). Visit south India without piling into the family jumbo jet by sampling regional items––try the masala dosa, a thin rice crepe piñata-packed with a spicy potato filling ($7.95), or the adai avial, a spiced-up lentil pancake served with a mixed-vegetable stew ($8.95). Chicken lovers can voice their vote with an order of chicken curry ($10.95) or chicken tikka masala ($11.95), whereas herbivoyeurs can spy on the veg chettinad, a Spice Route specialty dish featuring veggies cooked in a spicy south-Indian masala blend ($9.95). In addition to serving up slices at four brick-and-mortar locations, Mad Pizza delivers its meat- and veggie-laden pies throughout Seattle. From store to store, the menu of each restaurant shares madness-themed entree names, such as the Mad pepperoni, the Maditerranean pizza—which hoists pesto, salami, and capers—and the Mad Scientist pizza, baked over a bunsen burner. They also prepare succulent Chicago–style italian beef sandwiches and meatball subs.
