The North Coast Music Festival is a three-day hat doff to the waning days of summer. Send off halcyon hours in style and gird your gooseflesh for the inevitable onslaught of winter with a lineup that includes electronic, hip-hop, jam-band, and indie-rock artists both famous and obscure. On Friday, the electronic poppiness of The Chemical Brothers will waft from the stage until it enters the noses and eventually implants itself in the brains of concertgoers. Saturday's lineup features the progressive improvisation of Umphrey's McGee and a DJ set by Moby, or Richard Melville Hall on his birth certificate, who has provided hot, ambient beats to films such as Any Given Sunday, The Beach, and Citizen Kane. The festival's final day presents Chicago product Lupe Fiasco and crowd-moving collaborators Nasty Nas and Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley.

A glass of cold sangria in one hand, a plate of food balanced in the other. The only reason to disrupt such a perfect combination might be to dance to the live band performing just a few feet away. That's the basic Midsommarfest formula, and every summer, nearly 50,000 people flock to Andersonville for this celebration of all things local. Going strong for the past half century, the fest takes over Clark Street from Foster to Catalpa with booths for food and crafts as well as five different stages. These showcase eclectic entertainments that truly reflect the neighborhood's charm: not just cover bands (though there are those, too), but a pet parade, Swedish music, dance troupes, and sets from blues, roots, and funk bands. All the fun also helps the neighborhood, and not just because stoplights are powered by laughter; proceeds go to benefit community causes.

Facilitating the fan-delighting collision of comic-book universes and intergalactic heroes, Wizard World organizes Comic Cons and pop-culture conventions across the continent. At each event, stars from the silver screen set down roots in booths across the convention floor, wielding markers for autographs and their photo-op-ready smiles. Past guests have run the gamut from William Shatner, Patrick Stewart, and the cast of AMC?s The Walking Dead. Away from the crowds, stars also participate in talks and Q&A panels as part of the event?s programming. Along with beloved actors, Wizard World?s conventions grant guests a chance to interact with writers and artists as well as partake in activities such as gaming tournaments and costume contests.

The 31st annual Chicago Music Awards honors the city's best entertainers from all genres during a night of performances from established melody makers and up-and-coming acts. The three teen brothers of rock group Rebelmann energize the audience before switching stage space with Sugar Blue, a Grammy Award–winning harmonica virtuoso who honed his skills while playing along to Bob Dylan records and crafting an enormous collection of blown-glass figurines. The evening will also include songs from the six top finalists in this year's highly competitive Chicago Emerging Star Contest as a group that boasts a 13-year-old rapper, a 10-year-old musical prodigy, and a male R & B group competes for a cash prize and a solid-chocolate microphone.

After their inaugural year, the organizers of the Porky?s Rib Fest hope that their event becomes an oft-circled event on the calendars of barbecue-loving Chicagoans. If this year?s vendor lineup is any indication, they?re already well on their way. Recruited from both inside and outside of Chicago, the award-winning roster includes vendors with decades of combined grilling experience. Hailing from the Lone Star State, Texas Thunder BBQ is a perennial favorite at rib fests around the country. On the hometown front, cooks from Berwyn?s Chicago BBQ Company sling their signature brand of slow-smoked meats. The lineup even includes an international representative: based out of Sydney, Australia, the meat masters of Aussom Aussie tempt taste buds at home and abroad with unexpected flavors such as fruit-based sauces.

Aside from chowing on an international buffet of barbecue, attendees can enjoy a continuous stream of live music emanating from Toyota Park?s expansive amphitheater. Acts have included '70s mainstays, a contestant from a televised music competition, as well as bands covering the iconic catalogs of KISS, Led Zeppelin, and Jimmy Buffett. Elsewhere, adults drool over the impressive rides on display at an onsite car show, and kids cash in tickets to climb aboard more than 30 carnival rides. A fireworks show will leave the sky more colorful than that summer when it got all those tattoos.

The Southside Polish Fest is said to be the largest of its kind in the country, an honor it has earned by attracting not just the local Polish community, but by welcoming Chicagoans of all ethnicities. Whether familiar with the culture or not, revelers can immerse themselves in it by sampling traditional foods and beers and by taking in the live performances scheduled to fill all three days of the festival. This entertainment includes polka bands, Polish musicians, traditional dancers, the unceasing movement of the sun, and even a pierogi-eating contest. Kids will be drawn to the 25 carnival rides, which riders can enjoy by purchasing wristbands good for either 4-hour blocks or all three days of the festival.
