A golf cart calmly rolls over the footbridge of a creek, its soft motor interrupted only by the pings of golf balls cutting through the air. At The Bridges at Beresford, the creek babbles alongside all but two of the course's nine holes. In keeping with the aquatic obstacles, two large ponds crowd the action between the second and fourth and the sixth and eighth fairways. Though only one of the four par 4s extends beyond 400 yards, the two par 3s are daunting, measuring 194 yards and 175 yards from the back tees, respectively. Strategically placed bunkers further complicate the terrain, forcing players to dial in their approaches and write SOS whenever they get lost.

Course at a Glance:

  • 9-hole, par 36 course
  • Total length of 3,369 yards from the back tees
  • Four sets of tees per hole

The Bluffs Golf Course plots a 6,684-yard path through groves of trees and around waterways for a challenging 18-hole layout. A session at the onsite driving range prepares swings and sleep-deprived 9-irons in time for the upcoming pin-hunting odyssey, where water comes in play on five of the first six holes. Duffers can redeem a disappointing round at the 18th hole, a 570-yard behemoth that entices aggressive, satisfying drives and lacks the aquatic hazards that temper bold play on prior holes. A relatively difficult course when played from the tips, the course offers four color-designated tee options to cater to players of all handicaps as well as those with an irrational allegiance to red.

Course at a Glance:

  • 18-hole, par 72 course

  • Length of 6,684 yards from the farthest tees

  • Course rating of 72.5 from the farthest tees

  • Slope rating of 128 from the farthest tees

  • Four tee options

Located in 19 cities nationwide, Wine and Canvas commissions accomplished artists to spread the joy of painting during informal painting classes that pair a featured painting with specialty cocktails and wines available for purchase. The mobile studio’s monthly calendar includes themed classes in which instructors expound on the nuances of painting Parisian street lamps, Japanese flowers, or Venetian cityscapes. The master painters—many of them local artists—provide step-by-step instructions while students mimic each stroke and periodically dip their brushes into glasses filled with crimson cabernet. Each of the studio’s various drink-friendly venues boasts a specialty libation selected to incite creativity or conversations with fellow painters. When the artistic frenzy concludes, students return home with a finished masterpiece large enough to conceal any wall safe or mirror portal.

The rambling, picturesque paths in Yankton Trail Park are quiet at night?until they're lit up with neon and lighting effects for the Electric Glow Run. Featuring upbeat music and some multicolored flair, the all-ages 5K run follows a course lined with themed stations that include eye-opening special effects and inflatables. An after party keeps the light show going at a main stage featuring live bands and DJs and an outdoor beer garden for guests aged 21 or older. Though everyone receives a T-shirt, participants are encouraged to get creative with their outfits and glowing accessories are available for sale. A portion of the event proceeds benefit Feeding South Dakota.

At County Fair Fun Company, kids excitedly tackle action-filled games and rides, then safely ricochet off the inflated surfaces of Technicolor bounce houses. A Dora the Explorer–themed inflatable packs slides, tropical trees, and huts into a cushy, educational wonderland, and inside a bounce castle, little ones can pretend they're inside one of King Arthur’s legendary bounce castles. Setting foot on solid ground, tykes make their way to the bumper-car arena, where circular vehicles offer easy steering, each crash eliciting shouts and laughter from drivers. Between bumper demolition derbies, children wander the labyrinthine tunnels and slides of County Fair's padded play dome, navigating tricky rolling platforms and shaky rope bridges to find a safe spot to exchange stock tips. Video games exercise hand-eye coordination for both kids and grownups, who can also lounge in County Fair's beer garden and sip on potent potables for an additional cost.
