Kickboxing classes deliver a knee to the face of fat, burning up to 860 calories an hour with the high-energy striking moves of martial arts and boxing. All four limbs get in on the bag-bludgeoning action at iLoveKickboxing as each class provides a full-body workout that tones arm, leg, and tentacle muscles while tightening the body’s core and improving balance. Hitting the heavy bags won't skin your knuckles once you don the included boxing gloves, which also double as excellent spring-loaded props for re-creating Three Stooges gags. Class times and dates vary based on each location: Woodinville, Seattle, Gig Harbor, Puyallup and Lacey.
With over 15 million students trained since their founding in 1968, Villari's Martial Arts Centers continue to train pugnacious pugilists young and old using techniques crafted by Grandmaster Fred Villari. Developed as a fusion of classic Eastern fighting styles, Villari's exclusive Shaolin Kempo Karate combines the graceful energy of Shaolin, the quick, explosive blows of kempo and karate, and the grappling of Chin Na to provide combatants with a varied, effective self-defense system. Children gain strength and discipline in youth classes, while adult classes leave grown-ups ready to handle anything from dojo defense to tense lunchroom stand-offs over the day's last apple bran muffin.
Under the guidance of chief instructor and seasoned mixed-martial-artist Stephen Whittier, students at Nexus practice engaging routines to improve both physical condition and self-defense. The women's fitness boot camp carves fit bodies during 60-minute sessions jam-packed with circuit training, trick roping, and noncontact kickboxing against incorporeal assailants. Students complete one workout per week on their own and attend two weekly sessions, scheduled on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, or Saturday morning. Instructors keep classes interesting by varying workouts, and a blend of muscular toning and cardio conditioning help keep legs from outpacing lungs or weary esophagi. After the first six weeks, students can discover noticeable changes in body composition, gaining motivation and losing weight and the tendency to flinch at incoming medicine balls.
Ann Marie Kelleher began dancing professionally at age 8, winning awards with her Irish dancing troupe. But with time came family and a career as a nurse, and dancing fell by the wayside in lieu of boring gym workouts. Then Ann Marie discovered Zumba. It married the best of both worlds—dance and exercise—and she immediately fell in love. Now a licensed Zumba instructor, Ann Marie and her staff help others stay in shape at Shakin N Groovin Zumba Fitness & Personal Training. Their fitness and dance classes include not only Zumba, but also cardio-kickboxing, club-dancing, and strength-training classes.
The Neves family is a black-belt family, with more degrees than a thermometer. Manny Neves holds an eighth-degree black belt in the uechi-ryu karate style, and his wife, Sheila, is a sixth-degree black belt in the style. Even their daughter, Juliana—a first-degree black belt herself—has several Grand Champion awards in forms, fighting, and weapons. Though you wouldn't want to get caught in a street fight with any of them, the emphasis of their style is on etiquette and self-control rather than brute force. The Academy also offers yoga classes to tone the physique and promote deep relaxation.
