On a quiet, brick-lined street on Capitol Hill, the main relaxation room at Creative Hands Massage is calm and quiet, as nimble fingers harmonize physical and emotional wellness within private chambers. Massage therapist Ailie Ham oversees skin and holistic wellness therapies, which begin with cups of hot tea to awaken the senses and give droopy pinkie fingers a lift. Aestheticians reach for the spa's signature skin tonics, and bodywork practitioners work in tandem with aromatic organic oils, warm and cool stones, or acupuncture needles to release tension and restore balance. Two blocks east in Union Station, emissaries of relaxation deliver pay-by-the-minute chair massages to prevent the stream of commuters and visitors from winding into a Gordian knot. Since graduating summa cum laude from the University of Palermo School of Medicine in 1981, Dr. Lucia McNabb has gone on to study many aspects of obstetrics and gynecology. She completed ob-gyn residencies in both Italy and America before eventually becoming a clinical instructor at Vanderbilt University. She later focused on becoming part of a private gynecology practice, where she developed an interest in cosmetic surgery. Dr. McNabb went on to complete a fellowship in cosmeto-gynecology and now performs everything from vaginal rejuvenation to labiaplasty at Sorgente Center for Aesthetic Vaginal Surgery. Surgical techniques are not her only specialty, though. She also performs med spa treatments such as Botox, Pellev?, Dysport, Juvederm, and laser skin tightening.
While most kids hope to smell freshly baked cookies when they walk through the front door, Jannell Brown's two children may be more likely to arrive home to the fragrance of homemade soaps and bath bombs. Brown––a state-certified science teacher, massage therapist, and owner of the green-leaning Sol Spa––has been teaching kids and adults to concoct their own spa products for decades, and creates custom blended recipes for customers in her spa's onsite spathecary. She combines her signature sugar scrubs, herbal toning creams, and natural lotions with natural and organic potions from lines such as Pevonia, and blends them into indulgent treatments ranging from manicures and pedicures to massages that incorporate heated Cape Cod beach stones.
The spa's soothing services cater to the needs of kids, teens, and adults, and prompted the editors of Cape Cod Life magazine to call it the best day spa in the lower cape in 2010. The garden-like interior combines calming green plants and a peaceful, oceanside mural that doubles as a backdrop for impromptu revivals of South Pacific, while an in-house boutique brings the focus back inland by showcasing the work of local artisans.
