The primary inspiration behind My Gym, a children's activity center with outposts in more than 30 countries, was to combat childhood obesity. This led to the development of a full curriculum of fitness and play classes for kids and invisible friend dinosaurs ages 6 weeks to 13 years. But the physical activity is just part of the process. As each child accomplishes the tasks set forth for their age group—which might include anything from sing-alongs to introductions to sports—kids experience cognitive and emotional benefits as well. The group environment helps students socialize while they learn to share and take turns, and the attention and support from instructors boost their confidence and sense of independence. For kids 2.5 years and older, progress is tracked through the Building Blocks program, a system that recognizes and awards children as they display their new skills at periodic acknowledgment ceremonies.
Jeremy and Janine Hanewinckel, a husband and wife team with varied but complementary backgrounds, own the Yorba Linda My Gym location. Jeremy—or Mr. Jeremy, as the kids call him—received a degree in child and adolescent studies at Cal State Fullerton, and Miss Janine is a certified teacher who, when not at My Gym, interacts with kids through her job at Disneyland. In addition to classes organized by age, their full schedule also includes year-round day camps and customized birthday parties.
Pizza is only one of the many tasty specialties that Canyon Pizza has to offer, but it sets a good precedent for the care and quality the chefs pour into all their dishes. Fresh ground sausage adorn the Spicy Sicilian pie, along with jalapenos, vine-ripened tomatoes, basil, and a thick layer of cheese, and they also arrive stuffed inside hot toasted subs brimming with gooey, melted mozzarella. If you're more of a veggie-lover, the Veggie Delight pizza features a medley of the freshest mushrooms, green peppers, tomatoes, onions, and black olives, while salads see the same crunchy ingredients tossed together with lettuce that the chefs chop fresh each and every day. Other homemade items include the garlic spread that cooks spread onto slices of garlic bread, and the chocolate chip cookies that they bake-to-order to ensure they taste just as good as the ones customers bake at home or inside their car's toaster oven. Of course, if you'd rather play the role of chef, Canyon Pizza also invites guests to create their own pies by choosing from a list of nearly two dozen ingredients, including ground beef, pepperonchini, sun-dried tomatoes, and hot buffalo wing sauce .
The Rinks offers both inline and ice skating for all ages and all skill levels. The Westminster and Yorba Linda centers boast NHL-size rinks, and Anaheim and Lakewood boast Olympic-size rinks. In addition, Anaheim's league-certified surface is used as the official training facility of the Anaheim Ducks. Skaters can take to the ice for classes on such blade-top pursuits as hockey, figure skating, public skating, curling, broomball, and more. For the ice-averse, The Rinks has three inline-skating centers in Corona, Huntington Beach, and Irvine which play host to youth and adult roller hockey leagues, skating clinics, public skates, and more. Open-skate sessions give aficionados the chance to take a few laps with friends and family, riding atop their own blades or donning a rental pair from the front desk. On Friday and Saturday nights, rinks morph into icy dance clubs, blasting hit music booming through the speakers and projecting music videos onto a jumbo screen. Birthday packages are also available at both locations.
Fibo Kids Art Academy’s instructors teach kids aged 4–18 the finer points of art with the Fibonacci method, crafting individual curricula within a peer setting, bolstered by doses of art history. They tailor the lessons to each student's interests, strengths, and weaknesses, placing kids in small groups for creative interaction with their peers.
To build a foundation for their skills, the instructors engage youngsters in in-depth art-history lessons that expose them to the paintings, drawings, and techniques of both past and current masters from movements such as impressionism and cubism. In addition to year-round afterschool classes, the academy offers one-week intensive summer camps that cover topics such as fashion design, anime and cartooning, and drawing on a sibling's face while he or she sleeps.
