Ever since Scavella's Cakes and Bakery opened in February of 2013, the shop's bakers have crafted desserts that look as good as they taste. Among their specialties are fondant wedding cakes and specialty cakes embellished with custom designs. They also bake individual desserts such as cupcakes, brownies, cannolis, and gluten-free cookies.
One of the original pioneers of the yogurt industry, Golden Spoon Frozen Yogurt has been whirling yogurt since the early 1980s. A bevy of rotating flavors includes tastes such as just chocolate, peanut-butter cup, café latte, graham cracker, and mango tart. Sample a small bit with a mini ($1.95 for 4 oz.), or take 32 ounces home to share in a quart ($6.00). Traditionally conical edible yogurt containers (small $2.75, waffle $3.25) make it possible for hands to hold the frozen delight. At 25–29 calories an ounce, health-conscious consumers can enjoy licks without translating each tongueful into the quantity of jumping jacks or flying starfish impersonations needed to offset it.
Drawing inspiration from local craft beers, the bakers at Brewcakes combine those same suds with local ingredients to handcraft alcohol-infused cupcakes with flavors that rotate monthly. Boozy creations include the stout beer base, whiskey, and Bailey’s frosting blend of the Irish Cake Bomb, as well as the chocolate-porter base and chipotle-chocolate frosting of the aptly named Chipotle Porter.
Beyond cupcakes, spirits find their way into other offerings—such as the Black & White Russian, an espresso-chocolate brownie topped with Kahlua-spiked chocolate cream, and the beer-braised beef that fills panini-style short-rib sliders at Brewcakes' café. In addition to alcohol-infused eats, café diners can also enjoy plenty of alcohol-free treats, such as veggie flatbreads, hot- and iced-coffee drinks, or water served in shot glasses.
At Nubi Yogurt, customers decorate blends of self-serve frozen yogurt with seasonal fruit slices and slivers of chopped-up candy. Georgia-peach- or pineapple-flavored yogurt waits for a complimentary showering of kiwi slices and mocha beads, while café-latte yogurt perks up customers with caffeinating chunks of Snickers or Kit-Kat. Most of the shops’ smooth, sinful flavors are fat-free, and are made with live-cultured probiotics that can help improve digestion. Each Nubi location boasts a bright, contemporary atmosphere with wireless internet, satellite radio tunes, and sleek tables polished enough to admire your new fro-yo moustache in.
Painted berry pink, tangerine orange, and mint green, even the walls at Sweet Tart Frozen Yogurt look good enough to eat. Along a glass-tiled wall, customers pull levers to fill their cups with their choice of sweet or tart yogurt flavors, inspired by fresh fruits or popular desserts. Next, they move to the gleaming-white toppings bar, where silver basins overflow with fruits, candies, and nuts waiting to be sprinkled atop peaks of yogurt so they can slide down them on tiny little skis. There are no rules here, so patrons can come up with their own combinations, whether they top cake-batter yogurt with peanut-butter cups and chocolate sauce or blueberry-açaí-banana yogurt with brownie bites and butterscotch.
