Amid Islanders Dive Center’s wealth of oceanic scuba and snorkeling gear, CPR- and first-aid-certified instructors chaperone flocks of students through PADI or SDI scuba certification. Divers aged 16 years and older kick off underwater exploration with classroom sessions supplemented by home study, wherein students gain book smarts to ready themselves for the dive. Next, aquatic scholars prepare for open-water certification with pool training, handing out complimentary major equipment, such as air tanks and mermaid-to-English dictionaries, while students provide their own scuba fins, snorkels, boots, and masks. Finally, students prove their mettle and earn their certification with open-water dives in local quarries, typically held over a two-day weekend. A quarry pass for the two-day excursion costs $40, and is not included with this Groupon.
Fledgling or experienced divers can outfit themselves with items from Islanders’ extensive inventory, including Viper open-heel fins ($89.95), an Ion mask ($74.95), an Arid snorkel ($34.95), and NeoSport low-top pull-on boots ($32.95). Scuba-certification students can get fitted and purchase all required gear at the center for $185, or bring their own equipment.
