Dinosaurs used to ingest rocks, an adaptive response to help digest the primitive Pre-Cambrian cuisine available at the time. Today's deal is much easier on modern stomachs: for $20, you get $45 worth of Mediterranean cuisine and drinks at Maroosh. The delicious dishes, fine wines, and excellent service at this elegant Coral Gables establishment recently translated into Best of Citysearch honors. Use your Groupon for lunch, dinner, or the Aztec middle-meal known as linnerunch. During weekends, reservations are required and valet parking is provided.

Maroosh features an ergonomic menu designed to promote comfort and postpone feasting fatigue. While you peruse the succulent lineup, enjoy the tasteful entertainment of belly dancers floating through the restaurant like welcome apparitions. Kick off your feast with a platter of fried white cheese ($6.95) or freshly prepped baba ghannouj ($5.95). Pass the plates to pass the time while you wait for your swiftly but carefully made-to-order main course. Equip your arm-feet with a pair of succulent skewers of lamb ($20.95) or beef ($18.95) kabobs. Or trade skewers for a knife and fork by ordering up the pepper steak ($24.95) or highly regarded rack of lamb ($26.95) Non-meat-eaters can reach for the vegetable curry (peas, carrots, and potatoes mixed with curry and spices, $13.95) or baked mousaka (sautéed eggplant topped with a mixture of tomatoes and chick peas, $15.95). Stop in for lunch for a variety of light meals such as falafel ($5.95), gyros ($6.95), and kebab specialties ($8.95–$10.95).

Pepper some exquisite wines or champagne into your meal to stimulate and lubricate conversation. Order by the glass ($7–$10) or series of bottled-up glasses ($25–$120). Maroosh also offers a wide range of beers and non-alcoholic beverages such as bottled water, coffee, sodas, and the traditional yran yogurt drink. Sip from the succulent moat surrounding a stocked castle of cuisine filled with fresh eats and belly-dancing maidens.

Reviews

The Miami Herald gives Maroosh a four-star rating, and the Miami New Times offers a rave review:

  • Lamb is a star here: An entrée of lamb medallions ($16.95) is thinly sliced boneless loin of lamb, grilled to order and topped with tomato, onion and green pepper, with rice and carrots, as well. Meaty and tender. – Miami Herald
  • The baklava is a must-have for dessert. It's a great rendition — light and flaky pastry, lots of honey-bound walnuts, sweet but not insipid, elegant rather than homey. This dish alone shows why Maroosh is always so crowded. – Bill Citara, Miami New Times

Yelpers give Maroosh four stars, and 77% of Urbanspooners recommend the eatery. Citysearchers give it a perfect five, awarding it Best of Citysearch honors in 2005:

  • The service is quick, friendly, and attentive. I've never been dissatisfied. The food comes out fresh and hot. The bread is served warm and the salads cool and crisp. – southbeachqueen, Citysearch

Groupon Says

Biff! Pow! Maroosh!

Maroosh isn't just the name of a great Mediterranean restaurant; it's also the sound that a steam-powered robot makes when he needs to get out of an embarrassing situation quickly. These real-life sound effects turned words are known as onomatopoeias, and they surround us in our daily lives. Every time you make a list of your favorite farm-animal noises or draw the sound of Batman punching someone in your math book, you are using onomatopoeia. What are some onomatopoeias expected to become popular in the coming year?

  • Splorsh: the sound of a river devouring its natural prey—the duck.
  • Brukang: the sound of hitting someone with a grandfather clock out of anger or joy.
  • Karff: the sound of an adorable kitten coughing up an entire lit cigarette.
  • Grrrummm: the sound of a washing machine who thinks it's too good to do cloth diapers.
  • Thork: the sound of Keanu Reeves gently resting his head on the desk to signify that his 24-hour recharging cycle has commenced.
