Today there exist more than 300 breeds of the ever-adaptable horse, although 90% consist of My Little Ponies. Mount an appropriately sized steed with today's Groupon: for $20, you get a one-hour trail ride at Wolfshohl Horse Training in Pearl River (a $45 value).

Wolfshohl Horse Training strengthens the human-equine bond with patient instruction and fun, relaxing rides. Upon arrival, equestrians are matched with a suitable ride chosen from a barn where champion show horses toss their laureled manes, then saddle up with the assistance of friendly staff. After spending a few moments at home base getting comfortable on horseback and figuring out where the glove box is, a group of about 14 riders will file out into a gently rolling wilderness for an easy one-hour ramble over scenic terrain. Rides head out between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. on weekdays and by appointment on weekends; call ahead to make your reservation.

Groupon Says

The Groupon Guide to: Chess Pieces

Chess is often called "the sport of the mind" because it flexes the mental muscles and its grandmasters have nicknames such as The Incinerator and Destructo, The Smashing One. To help you become a champion, here are the basics of the different chess pieces:

  • Pawn: Moves straight ahead one space at a time, but if it reaches your opponent's end of the board, the pawn is replaced with an obedient salamander.
  • Rook: Looks like a castle, tastes like a hamburger. Whichever player eats both of his opponent's rooks first is given an extra king "for luck."
  • Bishop: In addition to two black and two white bishops, each chess set also includes two yellow bishops, in case a third player wants to join in.
  • Knight: When a player loses a knight, he has the option of playing the rest of the match as a game of checkers.
  • Ward: Shaped like a bell, this piece can only be seen by the pure of heart.
  • Queen: Can move an infinite number of spaces in any direction, or through time to surprise your opponent earlier in the match.
  • King: At the end of every match, when only the two kings remain, the players fistfight.
