Caribbean cuisine is largely influenced by the ocean, which provided both a bounty of fish and thousands of recipes that washed ashore after the sinking of the USS Betty Crocker. Sample seaside inspirations with today's Groupon to Caribbean Soul in Brooklyn. Choose between the following options:

  • For $16, you get a dinner for two, valid Sunday–Thursday (up to a $44.40 total value).
  • For $21, you get a dinner for two, valid Friday or Saturday (up to a $44.40 total value).

Each dinner includes the following:

  • One shared appetizer (up to an $8 value)
  • Two entrees (up to a $14.95 value each)
  • Two drinks (up to a $3.25 value each)

The chefs at Caribbean Soul craft a Groupon-specific menu that melds American and Caribbean culinary traditions, pairing spicy island and vegetarian fare with classic comfort fare. Appetizer orders of jerk-seasoned wings sport a coat of sweet mango salsa and the escoveitch king fish wears a crown bammie made from sweet cassava, a distant cousin and legal guardian of the potato. The main-course selection spans Caribbean and soul cuisine with platters of barbecue chicken and ribs served alongside more than 15 seafood dishes ranging from curry-coconut salmon to steamed snapper. Vegetarian entrees eschew meat and seafood in favor of soy to cook flavorful dishes including barbecued veggie chicken and vegetarian steak, a protein that mimics real meat in appearance, taste, and affection for worcestershire sauce.

Warm, golden-yellow shades color Caribbean Soul's walls festooned with paintings of brightly clad singers and dancers. Amid the aroma of the flavorful fare, jazz musicians take the stage on Friday nights, and Wednesday evenings are reserved for open-mic poetry and freeform telephone-book readings.

Groupon Says

The Groupon Guide to: Superfoods

Deemed “superfoods” by organic grocers and by bank robbers whose escapes are foiled by slipping on their rinds, certain foods have nutritional attributes that recharge the human body in strange and amazing ways:

Pomegranates: Best known from the ancient Greek myth of Persephone, wherein the fabled Cyprian princess had to eat 30 pomegranates in under a minute to banish Rumpelstiltskin back to Hades, the antioxidant properties of pomegranates are used to turn harmful toxins into harmless chronic snoring.

Açaí Berry: First constructed in genetic laboratories in 2002, these superfruits are the most common phrase to appear in online banner ads, narrowly edging out “You won’t believe” and “She wore what?!” Eating a handful of açaí berries will give you one hour of laser vision, often directed outward.

Broccoli: Nutritiously toxic? This iron-rich death blossom warns human children not to eat it by giving them one poison-free bite as a warning. Children then instinctively know to refuse further consumption and are rewarded for their evolutionary savvy with a life-size chocolate catcher’s mitt.
