Offset the carbon footprint incurred by your morning routine of blow-drying your entire body in front of the blasting A/C with today's Groupon to Big Green Earth Store. For $25, you get $50 worth of eco-friendly electronics, handbags, and more. Eco-friendly holiday gifts let your friends believe you see them as socially responsible adults without neglecting their materialistic desires for awesome iPod speakers ($16.99) housed in funky gift wrap ($4.75).

Even if you aren't washing clothes in the Wissahickon Creek to reduce your energy consumption, staying mindful about the products you buy can turn your carbon footprint into an adorable shrinkie dink (possibly a California Raisin or Automan). Big Green Earth Store is sure to stock something you already need, like a toothbrush made from recycled yogurt cups ($4.99) or reusable shopping bags ($5.99). Pick up some biodegradable doggie doo bags ($5.99), a set of recycled LP record coasters ($21.99), or an album-cover sketchbook ($14.99) for your music-loving pal.

Get your stylish sister a beautiful woven ricebag purse ($34.99) or recycled magazine clutch ($19.99) from Big Green Earth's collection of Eartha's Handbags. This eco-savvy organization collects recyclable materials throughout the Indonesian village in which it is based, and provides income opportunities for village women while providing you an awesome tote that your stainless steel canteen ($21.99) will be proud to call home.

Reviews

Green-minded shoppers across the web rave about Big Green Earth Store. The chic shop is part of the CultureMob Blog's Philadelphia Holiday Shopping Guide 2009, and Yelpers give it 4.5 stars.

  • All of the store’s goods are sourced from recycled materials. They do the worrying so that your shopping experience is less of a guilt trip. The staff is trained to answer any questions you have about saving the planet. No, really, ask away. – Kelly White, UWISHUNU
  • One of my favorite features of the store is customers can refill laundry detergent and cleaning products with their huge tank. You can purchase the plastic bottle once, then bring back your bottle for both cheaper and more efficient refills. – Beth, Green Philly Blog
  • In addition to being my neighborhood’s one stop shop for all things green, Big Green Earth Store is the U.S. distributor for Eartha’s Handbags & Accessories. Based in the northern part of Sumatra Island in Indonesia, Eartha’s created an unprecedented income opportunity for a disadvantaged community. The company collects used materials available in and around the village and recycles them into beautiful, practical products. – Paige Wolf, Examiner

“It’s Me, Big Brad”

Although they share some eco-values, the Big Green Earth Store is not affiliated with the similarly named children’s cable program Brad on the Big Green Earth, a daily morning show featuring Brad (ably portrayed by former modern dancer Glinette Brouche), a regular recycling plant employee transformed into a 750-foot tall goliath after exposure to radioactive litter. A sort of modern-day Paul Bunyon, Big Brad traverses the United States teaching environmental responsibility and eluding the Unconventional Threats Division of the U.S. Military. Although well meaning, most episodes end with Brad unintentionally destroying the city he’s visiting, followed by a moral conveyed through song. Here’s the closing song from his visit to New York City:

  • If you hear a rumble / don’t pout and don’t grumble / It’s me, Big Brad (it’s he, Big Brad) / You’re too small for my eyes / So I apologize / If I crush your dad (If he crushes your dad) / The Big Apple was fun / And I liked it a ton / But the recycling situation is bad (It’s bad!) / I didn’t mean to flatten / Downtown Manhattan / And I’m gonna need a pretty big, blue bag.
