The chilled salad fork, napkin ring, and fork monocle have overcomplicated mealtime for too long. Today's Groupon returns your morning routine to savory simplicity with $6 worth of grub for $3 at the Brunch Box food cart on Southwest Fifth Avenue and Stark. The food-dispensing pushcarts please appetites without the interference of pushy waiters who want to tell you about their second career as a candlemaker.
Cart food is a thrilling way to fetch your daily nutrients with a dash of spontaneous culture and the aroma of fresh, oxygenated air. Brunch Box's menu features daily mobile delectables. Breakfast and lunch are served hot all day long with such staples as the OMG! Breakfast Sandwich, blending eggs with ham, SPAM, bacon, and American cheese ($5) and the Black & Blue Burger coated in blackening seasoning with hearty blue cheese ($4). For ultra-fast cravings, ride the horse you were gifted over the holidays to Brunch Box for a grilled cheese sandwich on true-blue Texas toast ($1.50). All beverages range from $0.50–$1, so you can complete any fulfilling meal with little chagrin from your inner penny pincher.
When a friend or friendly stranger extends a dining invitation to go out for a meal, argue that going out is actually going in and run away to Brunch Box. Go out for a bite and stay out with cart-fresh cuisine that waxes nostalgic for the days of pushcart flower vendors, enthusiastic newsies, and men selling kittens out of their bike's basket.
Brunch Box is open Monday and Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (but call ahead to confirm—Saturdays are rough on all of us).
Reviews
Yahoo! Food's Ed Levine Eats says the Brunch Box is one of the reasons to not shun street food anymore. VendrTV shot an episode at the spot, OregonLive.com wrote about the greasy grub, and the New York Times mentions the celebrated food cart:
- Portland is a street food hot spot.…one of our favorites is Brunch Box, where Ryan Incles and Ariana Berry specialize in breakfast sandwiches, hot dogs, and burgers—some of which are strange. Like the OMG! Burger, which layers a cheeseburger with egg, ham, SPAM and bacon, and the YouCanHasCheeseburger…a burger patty stuck between two Texas-toast grilled cheese sandwiches. – Ed Levine, Yahoo! Food
More than 50 Yelpers give five stars, Food Carts Portland thinks it's yummy, and six out of six Urbanspooners like it:
- It's definitely one of the best burgers in town. It's sooo good with the juicy, tasty patty sandwiched between two grilled cheese sandwiches on texas toast. Just thinking about it makes me want more! – Sophia C., Yelp
- Out of all of the food carts I have been to in Portland this probably the fastest serving cart downtown. When I order an OMG breakfast sandwich it is done in less than 5 minutes. The crew that works there are chill and down to earth. – Robert M., Yelp
- I love how new carts quickly take over a space and make it their own. Brunch Box specializes in sandwich and burger fare. They also do breakfast. I was lamenting earlier this winter that there weren’t any breakfast carts that could serve me up a breakfast bagel or sandwich and what not – dieselboi, Food Carts Portland
Groupon Says
False Food Carts
Today's Groupon gets you a nifty deal on tasty food from a cart, and it may enjoin you to try other street-situated food vendors. But beware: other "food carts" may actually be non-vendors attempting to swindle you out of some cash on the sidewalk. Here's a guide to determining if you are really dealing with a food cart:
The Situation: Your food vendor is attempting to sell you a hot dog out of a garbage can.
Is It a Food Cart: You betcha! Fork over your moolah, friend, and prepare for a tasty dog out of a hot, non-mobile cart. If there are bits of debris such as newspapers articles or gum covering your hot dog, pay extra for the condiments.
The Situation: The vendor claims to work for the King of Burgers and ushers you inside a gigantic cart to sell you a Whopper.
Is It a Food Cart: Yes, your food vendor has merely upgraded to a walled-in cart. While you're there, join the cart's BK Kids Club to receive a free kid's meal on your birthday.
The Situation: An aproned man reaches into his frozen cart and exchanges some gelato for a few dollars.
Is It a Food Cart?: No! And furthermore, your gelato is filled with snakes, most likely! Report this street-charlatan to the authorities and have him arrested for impersonating a street vendor.
