Because of its rich flavors and ability to sustain life, beer is often referred to as liquid bread, inciting a nationwide spike in the number of pints sold to confused ducks. Flock to ambrosial draughts with today's Groupon: for $11, you get two tickets to the 13th Annual Newport Storm Luau on Saturday, August 20 from 4:30 p.m.–10 p.m. at Historic Fort Adams in Newport (up to a $30 value).

The keen-palated alesmiths at Coastal Extreme Brewing Co., also known as The Newport Storm Brewery, stock a rollicking soiree with Pacific-style food, entertainment, and signature brews from an arsenal of more than 30 sparkling suds. The festivities begin with the annual debut of the Regenschauer Oktoberfest lager, which is brewed from copious quantities of Carapils and Munich malts in addition to the jealous tears of Bacchus. Shaded by a 1,800-square-foot tent, the beer garden attracts throngs of revelers with the delicate malt flavor of Newport's flagship Hurricane Amber Ale. Acute taste buds detect real blueberry pressings in the Kölsch-style Rhode Island Blueberry Beer; frosty cocktails spirited with Thomas Tew Rum fuel jocularity.

Polynesian cuisine and a pig roast top off imbibers' stomachs between sessions of grooving to live reggae bands, playing volleyball, and captaining cross-country limbo teams. Hula dancers serenely gyrate on one of two stages, and after the sun sets, a fire dancer deftly cuts blazing swaths through the dark night air. Proceeds from the event support the Fort Adams Trust, which aims to restore and maintain the historic pre-Revolution structure.

The Groupon Guide to: American Comedy

Comedy (the smiling mask) has been around for as long as humans have grasped their own mortality. Here’s a look at American history’s most popular comedic tropes:

1940s: Most of the Greatest Generation’s humor revolved around cartoon animals fighting fascism or not understanding the nicknames of baseball players.
Era’s most memorable catchphrase: “Beat it, Detweiler, the lady’s talking at me!”

1950s: To quote the billboards that popped up all over America’s burgeoning freeway systems, “Comedy and communism start the same way. Report all funny business to your local sheriff.” There was no comedy in the '50s.
Era’s most memorable catchphrase: (hushed whisperings)

1960s: Men in business suits holding briefcases walking in a single-file line off of a cliff.
Era’s most memorable catchphrase: “Strawberry alarm clock!”

1970s, '80s, and '90s: Sarcastic Bill Murray.

2000s: Television offices that are just like your office.
Era’s most memorable catchphrase: “Low-quality video of cat existing.”
