For thousands of years, general stores met the supply needs of rural populations, and aluminum was more valuable than gold. Today's Groupon performs alchemy on your taste buds: for $7, you get $15 worth of eclectic fare and drinks at the General Store Café in Pittsboro.

The anytime meal house originated as a natural-foods grocery in the late '70s, a time when you could still find lettuce that wasn't in a can. Since moving the store to a bright, capacious space with high ceilings and massive windows in 1994, the café side of the General Store began to take shape, gradually phasing out the grocery. Stop in for breakfast and enjoy a bowl of organic vanilla yogurt swimming with fresh fruit ($5.95) or a quiche of the day made with local free-range eggs and a meat ($5.50) or veggie ($4.95) option. Lunchtime grub includes salads, such as the greek salad starring crostini with tapenade ($7 for a large, $5 for a small). Diners can also seek out sandwiches served on a bread of their choice, including black russian, vienna white, sunflower, sourdough, and invisible. Sample the smoked turkey and provolone ($5.50) or the veggie-friendly avocado club stacked with smoked mozzarella, red onion, and avocado and drizzled with tomato vinaigrette ($6.95). Dinner, served Monday through Saturday, includes burritos made with brown rice, black beans, white-cheddar cheese, and your choice of mild salsa rojo or spicy salsa verde ($11–$13).

The General Store features live music three nights a week and boasts a stage, sound system, bar, mind-blowing Tesla coils, a dance floor, and a patio area. While there, guests can admire and support works by local artists or participate in special events such as fundraisers and open-mic nights on the second Thursday of every month. The General Store opens its doors for America’s favorite middle child, brunch, on Sundays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m, and the first Sunday of each month is a day of sidewalk sales, local art, live music, and mime jousting along Hillsboro Street.

  • This place is cool. You can purchase local art here while reading a book. They have another area where you can have lunch. Quaint Coffee House. – Terry W., Yelp
  • If you want to connect with the Pittsboro / Chatham arts community, this is the place to hang out. I have been meeting friends here for coffee, lunch, and dinner since the place opened, and it just get [sic] better. – Mentor Marj, Google Maps

Groupon Says

The Groupon Guide to: European Travel

We can thank Europe for many things–the Enlightenment, both Sistine Chapels, and most of all, discovering America. Now, you can thank Europe in person with these handy travel tips:

Travel In Style: Get to Europe the way famous stars do–by hang-gliding from the tallest peak in Massachusetts over all 10 miles of Atlantic Ocean onto the smallest peak in Portugal, the capital of Spain.

Identify Yourself: To make sure local Europeans recognize you as American, keep your dollar bills stapled to the outside of your clothing.

Don't Learn the Language: If you don't speak European, don't worry. All Europeans understand English, but only when it is shouted.

Get Some Culture: Opened in 2006, Europe's Louvre Museum contains all sorts of wacky sculptures from famous old-timey Europe types, plus lots of cool American art to make your trip worthwhile.

Visit Your Local Embassy: If you get homesick, stop at the nearest embassy to plant your feet on familiar ground. If you find an Embassy Suites, this is the same thing.
