This Groupon is the golden chopstick to unlimited fresh fish housed in sticky rice and seaweed at Mas Sake, the buzzing nightspot in Marina. You get $50 worth of Mas Sake's creative sushi and drinks for $25. Use it for the all-you-can-eat sushi happy hour to try 15 types of rolls including California, spicy tuna, and salmon, plus seven types of nigiri such as albacore, eel, and yellowtail. (The special costs $25, so bring a friend.)

Mas Sake serves creative specialty rolls such as the intergalactic (smoked salmon, avocado, cucumber, and cream cheese roll lightly battered and fried), 49er (tempura calamari and cucumber topped with salmon, diced onions, capers, and ponzu sauce), and Master Hugo roll (unagi, crab, and cucumber topped with spicy tuna and eel sauce). The menu has standard nigiri, plus fish-free "freestyle sushi tacos," such as grilled chicken and NY steak. All types of sushi are known to be good food to eat when you're hungry.

Start a night out at Mas Sake; redeem Sunday through Thursday, and the entire table gets a complimentary round of sake bombs. The restaurant is a hip and modern nightspot where the music pumps loudly and the young of Marina pack the place nightly, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Sultry lighting in the dining room makes the sunset colors of the paint and decor glow like the sunset. Waitresses wear glittery and tight tank tops, and the staff is fast and friendly. The place fills up fast, so be sure to make reservations.

Reviews

The San Francisco Chronicle says Mas Sake is lively, and Gayot says the rolls are creative:

  • The dining experience here is as much about the party atmosphere as the food itself. The well groomed and highly polished residents of Union Street and surrounding areas frequent this place, and after a few saké bombs all 'round, they tend to get pretty loud. Of course, the owners encourage it–in fact, the Mas Sake in San Jose is a bona fide nightclub. A selection of creative specialty rolls complements the standard nigiri menu. If you like your sushi with a little bit of zing, try the Ecstasy Roll. – Gayot
  • It seems that somebody decided that sushi and burritos have a lot in common. So out come the "freestyle sushi rolls," which are really burritos cut into slices. Not that the young locals seem to mind. They pack the 100-seat restaurant every night, giving it a lively buzz. – Robin Davis, San Francisco Chronicle

More than 290 Yelpers and more than 30 Citysearchers give Mas Sake three stars; sixty-four percent like it on Urbanspoon:

  • Definetly [sic] one of the perfect night club/night life place in the city -good drank, good people watching, good service! Sushi is delish! -the only negative, is that it might get too crowded! – Mario M., Yelp
  • I love Mas Sake! Its [sic] such a cool place to grab and drinks and have sushi. It is so true that this place is sushi served with style! – cutie81a, Citysearch
  • I love this place, and the food has gotten even better with the new menu. The staff is hot, and the music rocks!! – jenn4021, Citysearch

How to Drink Sake

Correctly drinking sake involves a complex ritual that honors the server, the drinker, and the sake itself. To avoid appearing culturally insensitive, follow these steps before you sip your sake:

  1. Point to the person who poured your drink and shout, “Towards candle, an eagle landed in my box of paint!”
  2. Read the entirety of Edgar Allan Poe’s The Fall of The House of Usher in the original French.
  3. Stare your fellow drinkers in the eye until the weakest-willed drinker looks away with shame in their eyes and departs from your life forever.
  4. Cry for six hours.
