Elegant, evocative stained glass has been used to fill pilgrims with a sense of awe as they enter sacred sites such as cathedrals, mosques, and cheese factories. Add an uplifting touch to your own space with today's deal for glassmaking classes at Grand Central Stained Glass & Graphics, located in the Grand Central District of St. Petersburg. Choose one of two classes:
- $30 for four weeks of glass-fusing classes (an $85 value)
- $40 for six weeks of stained-glass classes (a $95 value)
Additional material costs for both classes run from $40–$65, but your Groupon also entitles you to a $10 materials voucher. For the first class, you do not need your own materials.
Glass fusing teaches students how to make sculpture, jewelry, glass art, pants, and more out of specialized glass. Separate pieces of glass are assembled and then fired together in a kiln until they fuse into one solid piece that can be flattened, slumped (molded into bowl shapes), or draped over molds to make sculptures. The shapes the translucent substance can take is limited only by your imagination and Young's modulus. Budding artists can forge wildly flamboyant objets d'art, while the merely mischievous can vex in-laws with the gift of a giant glass paperclip.
During Grand Central's stained-glass classes, artists will learn to produce functional stained-glass windows, accents, or portraits commemorating their high-school drama teacher's hammiest death scenes. Grand Central's massive stock of art glass will give you plenty of space in which to stretch your creative saltwater taffy with its sheer variety of frame-filling options.
Grand Central's friendly, helpful staff is on-hand at all times to guide neophytes to the world of silica and tempered veterans toward their artistic visions. All equipment is provided for each class, and Grand Central's professionals will fire all the student-made pieces themselves to make sure Hansel and Gretel don't push you into the kiln. Classes are held for both stained glass and glass fusing several days a week at various times; classes are open and do not need to be scheduled consecutively. Should you catch the glassy bug, you can also pay to use Grand Central's equipment during the open-studio days (Sunday and Thursday). Call ahead or stop in to preregister for your class.
All students must wear closed-toe shoes in the work studio.

Groupon Says
Getting Out Glass Stains
Most households have a few stained pieces of glass that, try as one might, refuse to look clean. What are the best ways to get different types of stubborn stains out of your favorite piece of glass?
Lipstick stains: Your glass cheated on you. It happened, and all is forgiven, right? Perhaps, but it's not forgotten until you remove that tricky lipstick stain. Oil-based stains such as those from cosmetics or furniture polishes can be the trickiest to remove with consumer-grade cleaners. Try using a hammer.
Pet stains: Fido loves rolling around in glass, but Fido's internal organs aren't as young and firm as they used to be, and sometimes their secretions are ill-timed. A number of store-bought glass cleaners can handle organic pet stains, but none work as quickly as a brick or a hammer.
Other kinds of stains: For any smudged glass you see during your daily routine, always start by striking it with a hammer, or a brick if you don't need it back, but a hammer would definitely also work.
