You're familiar with politicians, but do you know what they like to drink? If you buy today's Groupon, you just might find out. For $10, you get a $25 Groupon to Bullfeathers of Capitol Hill, a restaurant and bar that's been serving food and drink to state representatives since 1980 and Max Trews of Fairfax, Virginia, since 2005. Grab your part-time pundits and leisure-time lobbyists for a late-night bite or Saturday afternoon burger and beer.

Clad in the traditional leather-and-wood pub décor, Bullfeathers is the spot where America's lawmakers have power lunches (Miller Lite and a PowerBar). Sidle up to the 40-foot bar, where a stiff drink makes bureaucratic red tape turn a lovely shade of cerulean alongside an order of spicy bull wings ($8.95). The Bullfeathers menu features old-school pub grub and progressive choices for vegetarians. Pair a portobello mushroom stuffed with crab ($9.89) with a bowl of the signature Newport clam chowder ($6.59), or lunch on the lobbyist salad (chicken, pecans, cranberries, mangos, and sautéed goat cheese with fresh greens and blueberry pomegranate dressing, $10.59). Sandwiches range from a classic reuben ($8.99) to the mouthwatering filibuster sandwich (smoked turkey breast, bacon, cheddar, sun dried tomato, and dijon, $9.49) and the conservator (alfalfa sprouts, avocado, provolone, lettuce, and tomato with basil mayo in a flour tortilla, $8.29).

Run on a platform of perfectly juicy burgers with your choice of cheese ($10.39), or shake up the status quo with a lean, delicious turkey burger ($9.79). Dinner plates include options for a variety of tastes, such as fresh tilapia with lemon butter, wild rice, and broccoli rabe ($11.89) or beer-battered chicken tenders with fries and slaw ($10.79). Make your meal an all-American patriot with homemade apple pie a la mode ($5.69). Sling back a few at a place where the Washington big wigs lunch and gossip about Spiro Agnew's fabled secret cache of rubies.

Note: Your Groupon is valid Monday through Friday from 4 p.m. to close and all day Saturday.

Reviews

The Washington Post affirms the politician-spotting potential, and Insider Pages users give the saloon and food five stars:

  • The saloon area, equipped with four newfangled televisions, otherwise imparts an old-time pre-Social Security and Medicare mood. – Rob Kunkle, Washington Post
  • Very cozy, with a warm rich look of elagance [sic]. The food is great too, especially the Steak offerings. The BAR is the place to hang out. – karen c., Insider Pages
  • This is where the decisions are really made in Washngton [sic]. Good food, good atmosphere. Keep your eyes wide open because you're sure to see some of Washington's famous here. – Dona U., Insider Pages
Creative Alternatives to SwearingBullfeathers is more than just the name of an establishment where Washington’s finest come to dine and gossip; it’s also a creative family-friendly alternative the next time you need to be dismissive without swearing. What other faux-swears are all-ages auditory appropriate?

Paint my Crepes, usage: “Well, paint my crepes, is that little Tyler Saunders? I haven’t seen you since we were both treated for that same rare disease!
Jabberjaw, usage: “Oh, Jabberjaw, I accidentally buried my cell phone with my uncle.
Nell, usage: “What the nell are you guys watching? Is that Jodie Foster in Flightplan?
Pizza Party, usage: “Give me back the antidote, Tyler, or by jabberjaw, I’m going to pizza party you to nell.”
