How to Dry Brush and Why You Should

Apr 25, 2018

If you've been to a salon recently, you've probably seen "lymphatic massage" on the service's menu. This treatment helps stimulate the body and remove excess water and toxins that settle in the skin. However, you don't always have to pay the big bucks for a massage. Dry brushing, a wellness technique, can yield similar results and be done at home. Learn all about this beauty trend, including how to dry brush and what it can do for your body.

How to Dry Brush

You can shower before or after you dry brush but when you do so will affect the technique. If you choose to use oil on the brush head (instead of right onto your skin), be sure to shower beforehand. Here's how to dry brush:

  1. Start at your feet and brush upwards (toward your heart) in large, circular motions.
  2. Do the same for your arms, beginning with your hands and making it all the way to your shoulders.
  3. Work counterclockwise on your stomach.
  4. Do this for 3-5 minutes a couple of times a week to get the best results.

Dry Brushing Tips

Don't press too hard. Your skin shouldn't be red or scratched after brushing.

Opt for medium-soft bristles. Softer or harder bristles won't accomplish gentle exfoliation.

Dry brush in the morning. Let your shower steam up and dry brush while it gets hot to help open pores.

Avoid sensitive areas. Be sure not to brush over any cuts, bruises, or skin rashes you may have.

Lotion your legs after. However, make sure no lotion gets on the brush bristles. That's for body oil only.

Benefits of Dry Brushing

Lymphatic Drainage

The pressure and stimulation from dry brushing can help with lymphatic drainage. The bristles work to exfoliate and sweep away dead cells, leaving your skin smooth and invigorated. This process can also help reduce the appearance of cellulite by breaking down and removing any toxins settled in your skin tissue.

Blood Circulation

The boost from circulation can make your skin look more toned and radiant. Dry brushing also helps unclog your pores, which allows nutrients to seep in deeper for ultimate hydration.

Stress Relief

Just like other self-care routines, dry brushing can help decrease stress. Like a professional massage, it promotes relaxation and general well being for your body and mind.
