One in ten confess to forgetting to celebrate dad on Father’s Day
Monday 10th June 2019: With Father’s Day just around the corner, the card to Dad should already be in the post, but research released today from Groupon reveals that Britain is a nation of forgotten fathers, with one in ten Brits (10 per cent) likely to forget to buy a Father’s Day card for their dad this year.
Proving to be the priority parent, over a quarter (26 per cent) of Brits say they buy their mum a Mother’s Day card or present but would never buy the same for their dads. Adding insult to injury, one in seven Brits (14 per cent) admit that they have forgotten Father’s Day altogether in the past. Men appear to be the worst culprits here, with 16 per cent letting it slip their minds (vs 11 per cent of women).
Mum’s the word
It’s not just the lack of presents on Father’s Day that prove that mum is favoured. Over two fifths (43 per cent) of Brits state they visit their mums a lot more than they see their dads, and over half (57 per cent) admit they speak to their mums more. A quarter of Brits say they only speak to or call their dads once a month or less (23 per cent) and two fifths (42 per cent) spend ten minutes or less on the phones to them. This is a surprisingly low amount of time when you consider that Brits waste on average 32 hours a month scrolling on their phones – precious time which could be dedicated to catching up with the old man.
Man’s best friend
The research also found that Brits need to brush up on their knowledge when it comes to dad, with one in ten millennials (12 per cent of 18 – 34 year olds) admitting to not knowing their dad’s birthday. In fact, 13 per cent of Brits confirmed that man’s best friend is certainly not Dad, admitting they are more likely to remember their pet’s birthday than their own father’s special day!
Although over a quarter (28 per cent) of Brits admit they forget to speak to their dads, they do feel guilty of this neglect, with 27 per cent admitting they feel bad that their mum gets more attention than their dad. Proving that dad still plays an important part in our lives, over half (52 per cent) of Brits say their dad is someone they go to for advice and 45 per cent say they trust their dad more than anyone else.
Jon Wilson, Managing Director of Northern Europe Groupon, says: “Dad obviously plays a really important role in our lives, but it’s fair to say that he can sometimes get overlooked. Whilst dads can be notoriously hard to buy for, Father’s Day is the perfect day to show your dad how much you appreciate him, so whether that’s through a day out go karting or a gig to see his favourite band (even if it’s not yours) – what’s most important is spending quality time together!”
This Father’s Day, it’s Groupon to the rescue. With thousands of deals live on site, there’s a huge range of choice. Plus if you’re one of the 10% who regularly forget Father’s day, you can buy right up to the last minute.
