When a student is hungry, he or she may have a hard time concentrating. That, in turn, may translate into disruptive behavior that makes it so the rest of the class has a hard time concentrating as well. Two members of the Arvada Sunrise Rotary Club, Bob Bell and John Thielen, decided to stop that cycle. They partnered with Metro State University and Mountain Packaging, Inc. to provide weekend supplies of food to all the students of two elementary schools—roughly 600 families in total. More than 400 registered volunteers—many of them college students—pack up PowerSacks of non-perishable goods to send home to each and every student on Friday afternoon. The result: more than 43 tons of food distributed in the last year alone.
