In one of The Austin Chronicle's numerous"Best of Austin" awards handed to Sugar Mama's Bakeshop, the publication described Sugar Mama's' sweets as "...effervescent Americana mixing nostalgia with pop aesthetics." If it's hard to imagine what that might taste like, just glance at the menu, which offers up cupcakes named after Marilyn Monroe (blonde vanilla cupcake with Madagascar bourbon buttercream) and Frida Kahlo (spicy cinnamon and Valrhona chocolate cake with coffee buttercream). Other sweet treats take inspiration from popular breakfast dishes, like a french toast cake with cinnamon cream cheese frosting, or from a favorite drink, like the brown ale cupcake topped with blackberry and maple buttercream. And, there are plenty of vegan and gluten-free cupcakes too, none of which skimp on the cookie dough garnishes or almond whipped cream.
