Backup Strategies: Assume that your hard drive will eventually fail. Choose a backup strategy that works best for you, such as DVDs, external hard drives, or a managed online backup service. Create an automated and regularly scheduled backup procedure. Encrypt or password-protect your backup storage device. Periodically test and restore your backup to verify that data is being backed up properly. Keep at least one verified backup of critical data off-site in a secured and environmentally controlled facility.
Best Practices to Avoid Data Loss: Never upgrade any system without verifying that your data is backed up. Use up-to-date hardware and software utilities for data security. Scan all incoming data for viruses, including packaged software. Use ventilation, fans, and/or air conditioning to keep servers at the proper operating temperature. Connect systems to an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) to protect against power surges. Power down and take extreme caution when moving computers. Avoid static electrical charges when touching or handling the media. Train users to report any unusual noises and power down immediately if a drive makes scraping, tapping, clicking, or humming sounds.
Data Recovery Software or Service?
First, assess the value of your data. If the value is less than $800, consider do-it-yourself software as a recovery option. If the value is more than $800, choose a professional data recovery service. The use of data recovery or utility software can potentially cause data loss. The use of a professional data recovery service will maximize the chances of recovering data. Do not attempt recovery yourself on severely traumatized drives (i.e., turning the computer off and on or using over-the-counter diagnostic tools) as this may cause further damage or permanent data loss. If the drive makes scraping, tapping, clicking, or humming sounds do not use data recovery or utility software. Do not power up a device that has obvious physical damage, or is making unusual sounds. Shut down the computer to avoid further damage to the drive and its data.
Encrypt your data, especially if using a laptop or other portable device, and use a complex or unique password. Protect and monitor your confidential data wherever it is stored. Secure your wired or wireless network. Install and update anti-virus and anti-spyware software. A 2009 survey of companies who suffered a data security breach in the last 2 years revealed that 19% of them occurred with third-party data recovery vendors. If you have lost critical business information, or personal and confidential data, make sure your data recovery service provider has proper security protocols in place. The National Institute of Standards and Technology recommends the proper security vetting of data recovery service providers before lumina over equipment and critical data to them.(NIST SP 800.34, Section 5.1.3) DriveSavers is the only certified secure data recovery service provider in the industry today. DriveSavers has undergone stringent security audits and is SAS-70 Type II compliant. DriveSavers meets the most stringent security requirements mandated by corporations and government agencies.
