What does happiness taste like?
If you ask Eating Berkeley blogger Josh Escobar, it tastes like the food at Build Pizzeria Roma. During his first visit to the downtown Berkeley eatery, he found culinary bliss in slices of Roman-style pizza, authentic Italian antipasti, and craft cocktails. Escobar isn't the only one who feels this way—in 2013, Build Pizzeria Roma garnered a Best Of award from East Bay Express for making an entire neighborhood grin simultaneously.
One reason for the restaurant's popularity is the customizable nature of its menu. After entering a stylish dining room decorated with enormous black-and-white photographs, diners sidle up to a long counter to choose from an array of sauces and toppings. Sauce options include favorites, such as a mellow san marzano tomato sauce and a house-made garlic butter, and toppings range from Laura Chenel Chèvre goat cheese to aromatic, delicately shaved truffles. Once an order is placed, a chef slides the freshly made pie into a wood-fired oven, crisping its thin crust to perfection in less than three minutes. Napa Valley wines, locally brewed craft beers, and artisan cocktails complete the dining experience.
