The Museum, like the town, is small. And unless you're one of those people who likes to read every word, going thru the museum is very quick. However, if you take one of the docent led tours, you'll enjoy the experience, probably meet people from all over in your small group, and really get to know how the (Moravian) people lived.

Tour guides are excellent and the subject matter is very interesting. The tour really gives you an excellent idea of how life was for the Moravian's in Bethlehem.

My husband and I spent a few days after Christmas visiting the beautiful historic town of Bethlehem, PA. One of the highlights of our trip was the tour of the Moravian Museum . If you visit, you must make this tour a priority. Our tour guide Madeline was delightful. She was a wealth of information and we learned all about the fascinating history of the towns founding and the lives of its first inhabitants. Madeline really brought history to life as she led us from room to room describing the purpose for each room and how the inhabitants would have lived their daily lives as well as describing their unusual living arrangements. She also led us on a tour of the fire station and the single woman's building across from the main building. We thoroughly enjoyed our time with Madeline and the lovely tour she provided us! Be sure to stop by the gift shop before you go. They have a small but interesting assortment of items pertaining to the history of the house and you'll want to take time to pick some items out to take home with you. The young man working in the gift shop was quite helpful and completely charming.

This museum is the perfect place to begin a trip to historic Bethlehem. The Moravians settled the area and were a fascinating but little-known group. Our tour guide was amazing - very knowledgeable about the subject and very friendly. The museum is located in a 275-year-old building. The tour guide takes you through several of the rooms and different topics are discussed in each. You do go up and down stairs. We had our two children with us and they too enjoyed the history and asked some great questions. I am from the area originally and had never been here before. If you are also a local and have not visited it, you should. The historic area is fairly contained and everything is within walking distance. You can buy admittance just to this museum or to several. We had a limited amount of time and chose just this one. If you only have a brief amount of time to spend touring Bethlehem, this is the spot.

From Our Editors

Founded on Christmas Eve in 1741 by a small group of Moravian settlers and christened “Christmas City, USA” in 1937, Bethlehem brims with history. To shine a light on this past, the Historic Bethlehem Museums & Sites works to preserve artifacts, gardens, ruins, and historic sites, and it shares these relics with the community through year-round guided tours and museum exhibits.

To this end, the partnership is composed of many non-profit organizations and manifests itself in various endeavors, such as:

  • The Kemerer Museum of Decorative Arts, which features exhibits like HairWork, a collection of mementos made by Victorians out of loved ones' hair
  • The 10.9-mile Heritage Trail, which snakes through landmarks, Victorian-era homes, and old Bethlehem Steel buildings
  • The Moravian Museum of Bethlehem, a bastion of exhibits about the town’s settlers, including their missionary work, education system, and medical techniques
