Pick up one of the leaflets you get when you arrive. It has small photos of the more famous paintings/artifacts in each room and identifies each one. Also, be aware that there are cards available in each room/gallery that describe the artworks on each of the walls. Sit and be still and enjoy the peacefulness of the beautiful interior courtyard - be transported to another world.

The Gardner is a magical place with an astoundingly expansive collection of master works from all over the world. It's far more than art hanging on walls. It is a time capsule of Mrs. Gardner's life and those who shared it. I have been going to the museum since I was a child and literally something new I hadn't noticed every time I visit. Whether tourist or a native Bostonian, everyone should visit this museum.

From Our Editors

The 15th-century style Venetian palazzo known as the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum is most famous for its historic art and contemporary collection – or infamous, perhaps, for its 1990 heist – but there are many beautiful sculptures, manuscripts and pieces of furniture that are also on display. Named after an American woman who loved the arts, the museum added a new wing in 2012 behind the main building that hosts live musical performances, prominent exhibits, concerts at Calderwood Hall and even two artists-in-resident apartments. The indoor courtyard, which has a spectacular year-round garden of flowering jade trees, summer blues hydrangeas and midwinter tropics flowers, is made even more beautiful when decorated for the holidays.
