The Gardner is a magical place with an astoundingly expansive collection of master works from all over the world. It's far more than art hanging on walls. It is a time capsule of Mrs. Gardner's life and those who shared it. I have been going to the museum since I was a child and literally something new I hadn't noticed every time I visit. Whether tourist or a native Bostonian, everyone should visit this museum.

Allow yourself plenty of time to wander thru this Museum. I was only there for 2 hours and definitely need to go back. You won't be disappointed.

It is a fantastic place, worth several hours and multiple visits. You can of course concentrate on the paintings, but there are also cases of memorabilia and the building itself, which is a work of art in its own right. To enhance your visit, be sure to pick up the guides to the rooms you are visiting, which give basic information about everything on display, plus detailed information about one or two items.

There are three floors of gorgeous artwork and the courtyard on the first floor is like being in Italy. Wear comfortable shoes and be prepared to climb stairs.

Go for at least half a day, especially when they have a concert or other kind of performance. Get the audio tour.

art is not labeled, cards are available in each room with numbers telling what each item is - if you'd rather not walk around with a card trying to figure out which piece of art is which, get the audio headsets before you enter

Parking isn't as bad as they make it out to be. Lots of meters on the blocks around the museum - you just can't stay for longer than 2 hours.

From Our Editors

The 15th-century style Venetian palazzo known as the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum is most famous for its historic art and contemporary collection – or infamous, perhaps, for its 1990 heist – but there are many beautiful sculptures, manuscripts and pieces of furniture that are also on display. Named after an American woman who loved the arts, the museum added a new wing in 2012 behind the main building that hosts live musical performances, prominent exhibits, concerts at Calderwood Hall and even two artists-in-resident apartments. The indoor courtyard, which has a spectacular year-round garden of flowering jade trees, summer blues hydrangeas and midwinter tropics flowers, is made even more beautiful when decorated for the holidays.
