I purchased the promo for my parents as I know they would be too frugal to spend the money to purchase it themselves. I called at least 3 weeks in advance if not more to schedule an appointment for them to ensure that there would be sufficient time to redeem the Groupon. I also asked in advance if there were any taxes owed/due since many vendors who offer the Groupon promo- especially the Asian places add all sorts of weird taxes to compensate for the Groupons. The staff was friendly and making the appointment was quick and easy. I called the day prior to the appointment to confirm and state that I would be sure to be on time. The day of the appointment, I dropped my parents off 15 minutes prior to their appointment and informed the front desk that I would be back to pick them up about 10 miunutes early and also to tip (this was a gift for my parents). I went back to pick up my parents about 10 minutes before their appointment should have been over and realized that they were already done. So basically the 1 hour massage was really between 45-50 minutes max because my parents were seen at 12:25pm when they were scheduled at 12:30pm and they were done around 1:15pm (so I guess they calculate 10-15 minutes for you to change). I asked both of my parents how the massage went and they both just said "meh"- they're typically not one to complain of course. I determined the tip based on their experience- which was 20% of the promo. I gave my father's massage therapist the tip first since my mother was using the rest room and I did not know who worked on her. After tipping my father's massage therapist, one of the staff approaches me and speaks to me in Mandarin- I kindly explain to her that I do not speak Mandarin, she then proceeded to speak to me in English. She said the Groupon promo specifically indicates that there is a miniumum of 10% tipping that is REQUIRED. I explained to her that I read the Groupon and am aware of what the proper tipping procedure was and that I had tipped the therapist accordingly- she was basically saying I NEEDED to tip more. Since when did tipping become mandatory? If they want the money to be required, then bill for it in the Groupon deal, that would make it legal. After I told her that I only tipped 1 of the therapist and was planning to tip the other one after I found out who she was, she just acted like she never asked me to tip more and proceeded to give me a phamplet with their promo hand written on their flyer with the address stamped on it and walked away. No apologies, no nothing. Why would I come to an establishment like this when your advertised services are not for the full time paid and you're ASKING for more tips? If the treatment was $100 and I'm tipping you $20, that's 20%- easy math; if you think you deserve more, you better think twice about it. A tip is not mandatory, hence it's called a tip- this establishment should definitely train their staff on some proper etiquette. I might just call back and speak with the boss "in case" she isn't aware of this.
