What do you get when you combine Queen Elizabeth I and a mermaid? The answer isn't a joke, though it is lighthearted. It's the family-friendly California City Renaissance Festival and Fantasy Faire, which replicates a 16th-century English fair, albeit with a dose of fantasy thrown in.
The theme of the fair is the court of Queen Elizabeth I, who is on her annual royal progress accompanied by her entourage, but joining the red-headed Tudor and her court are Scottish peasants from Clan MacGowan, pirates, dancers, musicians, and of course, a mermaid outfitted with a shimmering metallic tail. Merchants also are on hand to sell their wares, everything from the blacksmith's iron-forged items to the jewelry-makers' wire-wrapped pieces to the Raven Tavern's ale.
