Course is in bad shape. Greens are so dimpled you can't even putt. Cart ran out of gas halfway thru round. We then had to walk. Just a bad operation.

This is by far the worst condition I have ever seen a golf course. Wasn't mowed, tees were in shambles, the greens were atrocious, and what were previously sand traps no longer contained sand and were weeded over. The pro shop stock positions were terrible (for instance, there were only golf gloves for right hands) and the person working the pro shop when asked a question responded, "I don't know, I don't play golf" (a first for me). You should be embarrassed by even posting a Groupon and trying to drive traffic to this deplorable location which maybe once had a legitimate course golf. I feel like I was taken advantage of.

Terrible. This was absolutely the worst course I have played in all my years of playing golf. The owners have let this go way beyond you can imagine. The tee boxes aren't even maintained. I am a female golfer and NONE of the ladies tees were maintained. ALL of the bunkers are covered and overgrown with grass, the greens are covered in geese poop, and who knows when the last time was that they actually cut the grass. After the 8th green I gave up even playing. The carts are less than good as well. The sad thing is that it could actually be a nice course. I wouldn't play this course again if it were free!!! Would not recommend to anyone.

The course was in pretty bad condition. Weeds were going throughout all sand traps. Very nice employees and beautiful surroundings...just need some TLC.

Greens were in terrible shape. Golfed this course last year several times and it was far better. Am wondering if management/ownership has changed. Will use last remaining Groupon but after that, will not return to this course.

River's Bend has really gone downhill. The course is no where near the condition it was in years ago. The bunkers had weeds in it and the sand looked like it has not been raked in over a year! At times when I hit in the fairway I could not even hit the ball from where it was because it was in dirt.

The greens were nice but everything else needs some serious work. Bad fairways, horrible tee boxes and the bunkers were either full of grass or water. Staff is very friendly.

Glad had groupon to try again after years away. Will probably play again in warmer weather

From Our Editors

As its name implies, the course at River's Bend Golf Club nestles into a curve of the James River, whose waters rush alongside three of the fairways. Its design sprang from the mind of accomplished course architect Steve Smyers, who drew inspiration from the legendary architects of the 1920s and 1930s and their penchant for Herbert Hoover–shaped sand traps. For River’s Bend, Smyers incorporated naturally sloped terrain and woodlands to create fairways that challenge both novices and experts. Players pass rustic wooden bridges and white fences as they play, eventually facing off with a substantial pond tucked among the three final holes of the front nine.

Before teeing off at the first hole, players can warm up their swing at the driving range or take advantage of dedicated chipping and putting practice areas. For more guided practice, clubbers can sign up for lessons with golf pro Brandon Kelley, who covers everything from fundamentals to preshot mental routines, such as visualizing the golf ball as a miniature moon that needs to be returned to orbit.

Course at a Glance:

  • 18-hole, par-71 course

  • Length of 6,671 yards

  • Course rating of 71.9

  • Slope rating of 132

  • Four tee options
