In the 1980s, UIC's athletic teams adopted the name The Flames. It's a moniker that pays homage to the Great Chicago Fire, just as the team's mascot, a dragon, represents the fire-breathing cow that allegedly started the famous conflagration. Since the name change, UIC athletes have racked up wide-ranging accolades. The men's basketball team reached the NCAA Tournament in '98, '02, and '04, and the women's tennis team has won a staggering 17 consecutive conference titles. UIC has even launched some professional careers, such as that of soccer star Jay DeMerit, who went on to play for the U.S. Men's National Team and competed in the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Today, the successes continue to accrue across about 20 men's and women's programs ranging from basketball to swimming to volleyball.
