As a local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, Windy City Habitat for Humanity partners with families, community volunteers, and donors to build affordable homes for residents with low incomes in the Chicago metropolitan area. When Habitat for Humanity builds a home, it enlists the help of the family who will be living there. They contribute a minimum of 350 hours of volunteer labor, known as sweat equity, completing the project alongside volunteers, neighbors, donors, churches, and other supporters to engender a spirit of renewal and togetherness. Once families move in, they pay a no-interest mortgage with monthly payments based on 25% of their income. These payments go into a revolving fund that promotes the construction of more homes.
